There are big college football games… and then there are games that feel like an event unlike anything you’ve experienced before.

The Tennessee Volunteers vs. Texas Longhorns matchup at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville was already shaping up to be one of the biggest games of the season. ESPN College GameDay was in town, Johnny Knoxville was the celebrity guest picker, Peyton Manning made an appearance, and more than 100,000 Tennessee fans packed Rocky Top for a huge SEC showdown.

Then President Donald Trump came to Knoxville.

Suddenly, an already massive Tennessee football game took on an entirely different level of excitement, security, logistics and controlled chaos. Air Force One made a dramatic flyover of Neyland Stadium as the President arrived, Secret Service security was visible throughout the stadium and surrounding areas, roads and entrances were affected, and the entire game-day operation had an entirely different feel.

For us, this game was especially interesting because Babs works at the University of Tennessee, and I help her at the games. That gave us a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at what happens when the President of the United States attends a major public event.

This wasn’t just Tennessee vs. Texas.

It was college football, ESPN College GameDay, celebrities, SEC football, a packed Neyland Stadium, a presidential visit, Secret Service operations, an Air Force One flyover—and all of it happening at the same time in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Whether you’re a Tennessee Volunteers fan, Texas Longhorns fan, SEC football fan, college football fan, or just interested in what happens behind the scenes when the President attends a massive sporting event, this was a day we won’t forget.

We’ve got a historic day on our hands in Knoxville 😬

Gonna need y’all to pray for us. Most of y’all know Babs works premium catering services UT.
Obviously UT versus Texas is a big game but now we’ve added the President of the United States attending the game, to make what is already a chaotic game even a little crazier.

It’s crazy to think that the President of the United States will be in the same building as us and it’s already been a wild morning getting prepped for his arrival.

Love him or hate him, it’s still the President of the United States. I was no Obama fan, but I remember seeing his motorcade go by and it was one of the coolest, most meaningful things to witness.

Regardless, it’s a beautiful day in East Tennessee and we couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather. Excited to see the Vols take on the Longhorns and see a jampacked day college football.

Go America.

There’s a BIG new addition to Mackenzy and Baylor’s new start as a family… and four little paws are involved!

We headed back to one of our favorite places, Jerks Acres, to pick up the newest member of the family — Margo, a beautiful dachshund puppy! This is actually our third pup from Jerks Acres, so needless to say, we’ve had some pretty great experiences with them over the years.

For Mackenzy and Baylor, bringing Margo home isn’t just about getting a puppy. It’s about starting a new chapter together and building a home that includes a four-legged family member.

Dogs can bring so much into a home. They can provide companionship, encourage people to get outside and be active, create routines, reduce feelings of loneliness, and become a source of fun, comfort, and countless memories. For a young couple beginning life together, raising a dog can also mean learning how to share responsibilities, establish routines, and care for something together.

And if you know us, you know we LOVE our dachshunds! There’s just something about those little wiener dogs, their big personalities, goofy personalities, stubborn streaks, and endless amount of love.

Our Carnival Elation Bahamas cruise has officially come to an end. We arrived back in Jacksonville, Florida, bright and early, walked off the ship around 8:30 AM…and then realized our flight home to Knoxville wasn't until 8:50 PM!

We knew spending the entire day taking Ubers around Jacksonville could get expensive, so we checked into rental cars—and somehow found one for only about $30 for the day.

I've always wanted to see alligators and had originally hoped to find an airboat gator tour around Jacksonville. We found a couple of places, but unfortunately, we were getting toward the slower part of the season and couldn't find anyone with availability. Then we discovered Okefenokee Adventures!

Located in southern Georgia, the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is one of the largest intact freshwater ecosystems in the world and covers roughly 407,000 acres. It's also the largest National Wildlife Refuge east of the Mississippi River. The swamp is the headwaters of both the Suwannee and St. Marys Rivers and is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, including American alligators, wading birds, black bears and hundreds of plant species.

We made the drive up from Jacksonville, talked with the folks at the park about our options, and decided to go for something we'd never done before: A two-person kayak through the Okefenokee Swamp!

Instead of taking a guided tour, we chose a self-guided paddling adventure and headed out into the swamp on our own. We saw more than a dozen alligators, along with plenty of other wildlife, and had an absolute blast paddling through this incredible ecosystem.

The Okefenokee offers a bunch of different ways to experience the swamp, including guided boat tours, canoe and kayak rentals, motorized boat access in designated areas, hiking, wildlife watching, photography, fishing, camping and even overnight paddling trips. The main entrance near Folkston also offers the 7.4-mile Swamp Island Drive, the Chesser Island Boardwalk and access to paddling trails. After an exhausted day of paddling, we headed over to check out the historic Chesser Island Homestead.

The Chesser family settled in the Okefenokee area in the late 1800s, and the homestead provides a glimpse into what life was like for an early family living on the edge of the swamp. The current home was built in 1927 by Tom and Iva Chesser, and the property includes historic outbuildings such as a smokehouse, syrup shed, chicken coop, corn crib and hog pen.

After spending the day exploring the swamp, seeing gators up close, and learning a little about the people who once called this place home, we finally climbed back into the AC and headed south toward Jacksonville to fly home to Knoxville.

What started as a potentially boring 12-hour wait at the airport turned into one of the most unexpected and memorable days of our entire trip.

After almost 7 years without taking a cruise since leaving California and moving to Tennessee, this Bahamas getaway gave us everything from Celebration Key and Nassau to catamaran adventures, shipboard entertainment, good food, sunshine—and now an afternoon kayaking through a Georgia swamp surrounded by alligators.

Our Carnival Elation Bahamas cruise is starting to wind down, and we’ve reached our last full day at sea. After three full days of sunshine, exploring, and eating our way through the ship, we're definitely getting a little worn out—but that wasn't going to stop us from making the most of our final day!

We started the morning by finally trying breakfast at the sit-down restaurant on Carnival Elation. And honestly…it wasn't bad! It's definitely a nice option when you start getting tired of eating the same food at the quick-service spots around the ship. Sometimes it's nice to actually sit down, relax, and let somebody else bring you breakfast!

Even though our bodies were telling us we'd had enough sun for one trip, we put the bathing suits back on and headed to the pool deck for one more round of pool time. Of course, we couldn't do it without a bucket of refreshing drinks!

We didn't purchase Carnival's alcohol package, but we took a look at what it offers. The CHEERS! package is Carnival's all-inclusive beverage package, covering select alcoholic drinks along with many non-alcoholic beverages. The package generally includes drinks up to Carnival's per-drink price limit, with limits on the number of alcoholic beverages that can be purchased per day. It's worth doing the math before your cruise to figure out whether you'll actually save money based on how much you plan to drink.

Then something really cool happened on the pool deck—a live ice sculpture demonstration!

Watching someone take a giant block of ice and turn it into an actual piece of artwork was incredibly impressive. It's one of those incredibly specific talents that you don't get to see every day, and watching the sculpture take shape was definitely one of the highlights of the afternoon.

Afterward, we headed back to the room, changed clothes, and decided to cruise around the ship and see what else was going on.

We wandered into the art auction, even though we had absolutely no business being there because we weren't exactly planning on buying a piece of artwork. But hey…they serve free mimosas, so we figured we'd at least see what it was all about!

Then came the BIG event…BINGO!

After winning on our last cruise, I was feeling pretty confident about our chances this time around. So we went all in and bought the biggest card package available.

Surely lightning would strike twice, right?

Well…

NOPE.

We came up completely empty-handed.

After our crushing bingo defeat, we got dressed up for dinner once again, picked out some of our favorite cruise photos, spent a little time in the casino, and eventually made our way back to the room.

But honestly, after everything we experienced, we walked away feeling like we'd had an incredible trip.

This was our first cruise in almost 7 years since leaving California and moving to Tennessee, and even though I was hesitant about cruising again after COVID, I'm really glad we decided to do it. From Celebration Key and Nassau to the food, entertainment, pool days, comedy, dancing, excursions, and everything in between, this was an awesome quick getaway for the two of us.

If you're looking for a short Bahamas cruise, a quick couple's getaway, or a fun vacation without taking a full week off, this 4-day Carnival Elation cruise definitely gave us a lot of memories in a short amount of time.
