Signing the marriage license: what actually has to happen?
✨ You need an officiant + two witnesses. Washington law requires you and your partner to declare that you take each other as spouses in the presence of your officiant and at least two attending witnesses.
✨ Your witnesses don't have to be your bridesmaids or groomsmen. They can be people you choose to have present for the ceremony. So if you have two special people in mind, they can be part of this moment even if they're not in the wedding party.
✨ You don't have to follow a traditional ceremony. Washington doesn't require a specific ceremony format. You can exchange traditional vows, write your own, include readings, skip the ring exchange, have a short ceremony, or create something completely personal, as long as the legal requirements are met.
✨ Your officiant matters. Washington law specifies who is authorized to solemnize marriages, including judges and certain licensed or ordained religious officials.
✨ Don't leave the paperwork until the last minute. Your marriage license is just as important as the rest of your wedding-day checklist. Make sure you know what your county requires and who is responsible for completing and filing the paperwork!
