'Just a Quarter'
Over fourteen years of customising more strapless gowns than I thought was possible, I learned a crucial lesson, not about my craft as much, but about humanity.
I'm looking at her as she looks at herself in the mirror. She just came from hair and makeup trial...beautiful as the first spring flower. Her smile portrays a slight sulk, as she tugs at the strapless neckline, not feeling fully held.
Against her skin, expert hands gently explore the perimeters of her discomfort to discover a mere quarter inch (1/4") of negative space, but it's enough to make her insecure.
My trusty fail proof response is a technique I created for moments like this, but it goes beyond the craft, to humanity, care and presence.
When she looks in the mirror one last time, before one of the most emotional days in her life, I cannot be more sure that the smallest adjustment, a shift, a simple solution as nuanced as it may be, can transform not just a dress, but the way someone feels in their own skin, because in the end, everyone just wants to be held.
