*3 questions you should ask any DJ before you book*
1. How much experience do you have with events like ours?
- This gets beyond the "how long have you been DJing" question, and right into the heart of actual, relative, experience. Alleged time in a profession doesn't always adequately reflect having a relative skill set. Every event is vastly different, and so is every client. Just because a DJ knows how to rock a party or a club doesn't mean they understand the subtleties that go into a wedding, or have the experience to make the many constant adjustments that go into successfully pulling off a wedding.
2. What is your backup plan- for both equipment failures and emergencies?
And do you offer a contract that ensures services?
- Venues and wedding guides consistently push couples to ask about spare gear and backup DJs, and there is a good reason for this. Despite the best laid plans, anything can happen! Make sure your DJ has a backup plan in place and can articulate it to you. (This will also reveal a good bit about their experience in the field and overall professionalism) In this industry, we are frequently a major component in some of the most important memories of people's lives. We simply can't afford to just fly by the seat of our pants and pray it all goes off well. A tremendous amount of planning and factored in redundancy is crucial to ensure consistent success. I probably take this too far 😂, but I'm a chronically over prepared person. I have backups for everything with me, from the turntables and speakers to multiples of each and every cable, and at least one or two DJs on stand-by just in case. That's why our iron clad contract ensures that you receive the services you pay for, no matter what life throws at us.
3. How do you customize the music and flow to match OUR vibe?
- This goes back to every event and client is different, and just playing the same set doesn't work. Does your DJ have a website where you can customize your music (must play list, do not play, etc), as well as choose songs for all of the big events? Are they familiar and comfortable with the style of music you and your guests want played? Do they just go solely off a playlist, or can they adjust throughout the night based on what works and what doesn't, and do they have the talent, experience, and depth of music to do so while staying in the styles that you like most?
These are just 3 of the most important questions, but what is THE most important question is always just the one that will make you, the client, feel the most comfortable with booking them.
