Audubon visited the Florida Keys and Dry Tortugas in 1832. Audubon left Key West having sighted and drawn 22 new birds for his "Birds of America" folio. It is believed that many of those drawings were conceived in the Audubon House garden. Audubon's painting of the white-crowned pigeon features the Geiger tree found in the front yard of the house. The 19th-century home was built by Captain John H.

Geiger, licensed harbor pilot and master wrecker, who lived in the house with his wife and nine children. It was an era when shipwrecks occurred daily on the off-shore reef. It was a time of pirates and yellow fever, slave ships and Indian wars.

We are delighted to present a rare complete set of first‑edition Royal Octavo hummingbird lithographs by John James Audubon, printed and hand‑colored by J. T. Bowen in Philadelphia between 1840 and 1844.

This set includes:

🎨Ruby‑throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris)
🎨Anna’s Hummingbird (Calypte anna, originally called the "Columbian Hummingbird" by Audubon)
🎨Mango Hummingbird
🎨Ruffed‑necked Hummingbird (now known as the Rufous Hummingbird, Selasphorus rufus)

These original Royal Octavo plates—measuring approximately 6 ½ × 10 ¼ inches—are not reproductions. They are authentic first‑printings, each accompanied by its portion of Audubon’s Ornithological Biography text

Why this set is extraordinary:

Rare: The Audubon Royal Octavo first edition is seldom offered intact, especially with key hummingbird subjects.

Historically significant: Audubon wrote evocatively of these species—the Ruby‑throated as “the Curious Florist,” Mango as “the greatest ornament of the garden,” and the Ruff‑necked (Rufous) as “the magic carbuncle of glowing fire”

Exquisite craftsmanship: Bowen’s studio hand‑colored each lithograph, preserving the original vibrancy and detail nearly two centuries on.

Immediate availability—and limited access. Serious collectors rarely encounter an entire first‑edition hummingbird suite in private hands. With just one complete set in our collection, we anticipate swift interest.

To inquire, please call (305) 294‑2116 or visit us at the Audubon House. You’ll have the opportunity to examine these prints firsthand, in person.

Special offer for Monroe County residents: Admission is free throughout August and September with presentation of a local ID—an ideal time to experience these works in person.

This is a unique opportunity to acquire an intact, historically significant Audubon hummingbird suite in original condition. We welcome your inquiry—please reach out soon to reserve your viewing.
