December Birth Flower – Narcissus (Paperwhite)
• History & Origins
Narcissus is a genus in the amaryllis family, native to the Mediterranean region and known since ancient Greek and Roman times. It was formally described by botanist Carl Linnaeus in 1753.
The name comes from the Greek myth of Narcissus, the youth who fell in love with his reflection and was transformed into this flower.
• December Birth Month Flower
December actually has two birth flowers—Narcissus (Paperwhite) and Holly—but the delicate paperwhite narcissus is the main “flower” for the month, symbolizing winter bloom and fresh beginnings.
• Colors Available
Narcissus flowers are most commonly white or yellow, but cultivated varieties also come with orange or soft pink centers, making them perfect for cheerful winter arrangements.
• How Many Species?
Botanists recognize around 70–80 species of Narcissus (Plants of the World Online currently accepts 76), plus thousands of garden cultivars used in cut flowers and landscaping.
• Symbolism & Meaning
As a December birth flower, narcissus stands for hope, renewal, respect, faithfulness, sweetness and unconditional love—often interpreted as “you are the only one.”

Monday Fun Flower Fact: Poinsettias!

Bright, bold, and the ultimate symbol of the holiday season.

🌿 A Little History
• Native to Southern Mexico, poinsettias were cherished by the Aztecs, who used the vibrant red bracts for dye and the sap for medicinal purposes.
• They became connected with Christmas through a Mexican legend about a girl whose humble gift of weeds miraculously blossomed into brilliant red poinsettias.
• The plant was introduced to the United States by Dr. Joel Poinsett, the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico — and yes, the flower is named after him!

🌸 Colors They Come In

Poinsettias are not just red! They bloom in a gorgeous range:
• Red (classic)
• White / Cream
• Pink
• Marbled / Variegated
• Salmon / Peach
• Burgundy
• Speckled / “Jingle Bells” patterns

🌱 Species
• There are over 100 cultivated varieties of poinsettias today.
• The species used for almost all decorative plants is Euphorbia pulcherrima.

🎄 Fun Extras
• December 12 is “National Poinsettia Day” in the U.S. — honoring both the plant and Dr. Poinsett.
• Poinsettias are not poisonous — a common myth — though they can cause mild irritation if ingested.
• While not a state flower, they’re strongly tied to December and the holiday season worldwide.

🌸 Monday Fun Flower Fact: Bougainvillea

Colorful, carefree, and absolutely iconic in tropical landscapes!

🌿 A Little History
• Bougainvillea was first discovered in the 1760s during a French expedition led by Admiral Louis Antoine de Bougainville, who gave the plant its name.
• It’s native to South America, especially Brazil, Peru, and Argentina.
• Quickly embraced around the world for its vibrant color and drought tolerance, it’s now a staple in tropical and subtropical gardens.

🌍 Where It Grows
• Bougainvillea thrives in warm, sunny climates — perfect for the Florida Keys, the Caribbean, Mediterranean regions, Mexico, California, and other frost-free areas.
• It loves full sun, well-drained soil, and hot weather. The more sun, the more color!

🎨 Colors & Bracts

Fun fact: the “flowers” aren’t actually petals — they’re paper-thin bracts that surround tiny white flowers.
Bougainvillea comes in stunning colors like:
• Hot pink / magenta
• Orange
• Purple
• Red
• White
• Gold
• Even variegated or bi-color varieties

🌱 Species

There are about 18 recognized species of bougainvillea, with countless hybrids and cultivars used in landscaping today.

🌸 Monday Fun Flower Fact: Amaranthus 🌸

Say hello to the drama queen of texture – Amaranthus!

🌿 Once sacred to the Aztecs, amaranth was grown as both a food and a ritual plant long before the Spanish arrived. It was so important it rivaled maize as a staple grain.
🌈 The name amaranth comes from the Greek word meaning “unfading”, a nod to its long-lasting blooms and rich color even when dried.
🧬 Amaranthus is a whole genus with around 70–75 species found all over the world – some grown as grains, some as leafy veggies, and some (like our trailing amaranthus) purely for their show-stopping looks.
🎨 In floral design you’ll see it in deep burgundy, red, bronze, gold, lime/green, cream, lavender, and yellow-green – perfect for boho, tropical and moody designs.
💐 Those lush tassels add instant movement and drama to bouquets, arches, and centerpieces – especially for fall and romantic garden-style weddings.

✨ Have you spotted this trailing beauty in any of our arrangements yet?
