Greetings scientists! Today we continued our journey with sound. We created a rainbow water xylophone.

I began with having them make vibrations on the glasses to see if they sounded the same or different.

Here is the challenge: use water to make every glass create a different sound when you strike it!

See pictures and captions below for materials and instructions.

Hello scientists!
Today we mixed science with art and math. We made leap frog rockets!

We watched a video lesson to help us draw a frog.

Then we learned about how trapped air causes a propulsion force.

Finally, we used a measuring tape to find the distance the frog traveled.

It’s MAGNET DAY!
Today my little scientists explored magnets! First, we tested a bunch of different things we found around they house to see if they were attracted to magnets.

Then we created magnetic mazes!

Hello Explorers!
Today we explored capillary action.

First, we discussed what capillaries are. Then I told them about an observation I made:

Yesterday I noticed that N’s shirt was laying on the floor. The sleeve was in the dog’s water dish, but the entire sweater was wet! What do you think caused this?

We started our experiments so that they could find an explanation.
Materials:
Water
Food coloring
Cups
Paper towel strips
Rulers
Tape
Markers

Greetings fellow scientists! Today is a MESSY day. My little scientists learned about solids and liquids, and you can too from home.

Here’s what you need:
Corn starch (we only had tapioca starch)
Water
Food coloring
Popsicle stick
Shallow container

First we explored our materials to see which were solids, and which were liquids. We compared their properties, and went on a matter scavenger hunt around the house. My fourth grader told us that glass is a liquid!

See the pictures and step by step directions below.

Hello scientists!! Here in New York, it’s a snowy day! What a great time for an exploration!

If you place a black paper (or other dark material) in your freezer, you can lower its temperature. Then you can bring it outside to collect snowflakes! ❄️❄️❄️❄️

Today’s Science At Home Activity: Underwater Volcano 🌋

Today my littles ventured into Earth Science to learn about underwater volcanoes. First we compared the three layers of an egg to the three layers if the Earth. Then we created a model of an underwater volcano.

Materials:
Large container with cold water
Small container with hot water
Food coloring
Something, like rocks, to weigh the small container down
