It is very important to have a deep playlist. A DJ has to choose the music right, here are some tips:
-- Start with upbeat music. Some upbeat music which would get people into dancing mood. Be prepared to have an empty dance floor, but remember this only gets the audience to notice. No song for more than 2/3rd the length.
-- If this is a crowd that starts drinking, keep the upbeat music going till they start eating.
-- Dinner time: this is when you can take it down a notch, and even play full numbers. Be sure to grab a bite as well.
-- Post dinner dance floor: You have to now start riling up the crowd towards the dance floor (again if not yet done). Time to play the most popular songs. Up the tempo: bpm, volume, light effects, etc., Switch faster (no more than 1/3rd the length). Vary tempo: dancers have to get right back in.
-- As the night begins to wind down, slow down the music. Think of how to wind it down. Think of numbers and sequence beforehand. You can start playing more of the songs (2/3rd the length, for instance) Being a very common scenario you would encounter, you need a playlist deep enough to handle various scenarios and party types.
