JOINING the Italian Educational & Cultural Center TOMORROW evening as our guest teacher in Conversational Italian for the Young Professionals networking event is Mr. Eric Lavin!

Eric has ten years experience teaching Italian in the West Caldwell Public School District. He previously taught at North Arlington High School and Morristown High School, and has a Masters Degree in Italian Language and Culture from Columbia University.

He also serves as the Coordinator of the Italian Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Newark since 2022, the first layperson to hold that position.

The IECC Young Professionals Network is a series of events and mixers geared towards the younger generations in their 20s, 30s and 40s looking to either make headway on their careers, or keep their best networking fresh and relevant.

Come join us for our final summer night of the season - featuring a brief intro to conversational Italian, plus our usual nibbles and drinks - tomorrow, August 27th from 6:00PM to 8:00PM.

This event is open to all who live within the Jersey City or New York Metropolitan area and beyond!

Ninety years ago next month - after writing to the Bricklayers, Masons & Plasterers Union of Wayne Street, Jersey City in September 1936 - Casa Colombo Secretary Joseph Zampella secured a force of laborers that worked (for free!) on the historic construction of our beloved building.

Here is a photo of the day our local ancestors, Italians and non-Italians alike, banded together to break ground at 380 Monmouth Street. Immortalized forever in the fantastic photographic artistry of a bygone era.

Stay tuned for more of these historical posts this month and next as we dig through the archives of the Italian Educational & Cultural Center at Casa Colombo.

OUR NEXT ART SHOW on view at the Italian Educational & Cultural Center at Casa Colombo between August 22nd and October 24th 2026 is ‘MOONSCAPES’ — an exhibition featuring the captivating work of long time Jersey City artist Peter Delman.

Poets describe the moon as "envious" and a "ghostly galleon". The physical features of the moon have persisted throughout human history - same as it ever was. Yet it has inspired fantastical myths and wildly creative interpretations in all cultures. These paintings draw energy from the richness of both physical and metaphysical sources.

Light refreshments will be served at the ARTIST RECEPTION on Saturday, September 19th between 1pm and 3pm.

One for the books! Our ‘Big Night’ Dinner & Film Screening on Sunday, July 26th saw the rounding off of a beautiful five-month-long season of special programming in conjunction with our hit traveling exhibition ‘Louis Prima: Rediscovering A Musical Icon’. 🎺🎶

Little did our dinner guests know however, seated along their Tuscan tables mirrored to the very ones in the film itself, they were celebrating much more than the end of our exhibition. This year also marks the 30th Anniversary of this classic Italian foodie film starring Stanley Tucci, Tony Shalhoub, Minnie Driver, Isabella Rossellini, and many other famous faces!

Surrounded by Louis Prima’s personal artifacts for the duration of the screening, IECC also realized we'd brought a little bit of Louis Prima himself to the ‘Big Night’ dinner for the first time in the film’s legacy. Because if you know the plot yourself, whether or not Mr. Prima shows up to the dinner is fairly central to the film’s narrative. In that sense, we might have accidentally made a little history this summer… 😉

We would now like to applaud the following people and businesses for making this wonderful dinner and screening a real success:

Renato’s Restaurant of Jersey City Heights for their phenomenal food, co-founder Nonna Anita Apruzzese for her authentic timballo, Linda & Joe Consolazio of the Gia Maione Prima Foundation for being our most excellent special guests, and of course Juan, Seliva and Tarun of Top Waiter Catering & Staffing Services… for making our afternoon truly shine with their epic professionalism. 🎺🎶

So you’ve been to the Italian Educational & Cultural Center at Casa Colombo… But do you know THE REAL STORY behind the building and founding members that helped shape IECC into the museum, gallery and cultural organization that it’s known as today? 🇮🇹

Of course it’s a full century’s worth of incredibly rich history. One that began on the backs of hard-working Italian immigrant laborers and architects in 1936, a tale of a communal hall and Italian language school that had fallen into disrepair by the mid-20th century.

It’s the story of a dormant space that was revived in the 1980s and purchased in 1992 by a new chapter of visionary Italian Americans looking to preserve their heritage and social services for their vibrant local community.

Casa Colombo is an historical epicenter integral to the fabric of Jersey City’s Italian Village - one that was even threatened by developers before the turn of the millennium. Oh yes, we have one of those tales in our archives too.

Local Italians and Italian Americans have saved our building time and time again, and they will continue to do so as we mark our one-hundredth year anniversary in 2036.

Over the upcoming month of August, we’ll be diving deep into the IECC archives to bring you a short series of posts, featuring snippets of the history of our organization right here on our social media. We hope you’ll join us as we meet the faces and founders behind the Italian Educational & Cultural Center at Casa Colombo. 🇮🇹
