From Harlem to the world, James Baldwin’s voice as both an African American and LGBT icon challenged America to confront its injustices and indignities. His essays and novels explored race, sexuality, class, and more with an unflinching and unabashed honesty. Did you also know that in the 1940’s, James Baldwin lived in New Jersey before he set out to Paris?

Maya Angelou—renowned author, poet, dancer, singer, scholar, and civil rights activist—rose to fame with her iconic 1969 memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Over her lifetime, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom (from President Obama), became the first African American woman to recite a poem at a presidential inauguration (Clinton), and was honored on U.S. currency with the Maya Angelou Quarter in 2022. Her legacy is also honored locally through PS20, the “Dr. Maya Angelou Elementary School” in Jersey City.

Did you know that Dr. Martin Luther King spoke at least twice in Jersey City. On September 21, 1965, he received an honorary Doctor of Law from St. Peter’s College, where he also gave an address titled “The American Dream”, and on Wednesday, March 27, 1968, barely a week before his death, nearly 2,000 heard Martin Luther King at Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church on Belmont Avenue.

When it comes to iconic voices in Black history, few resonate louder—or hit harder—than Malcolm X. The revolutionary leader was just 39 when he was tragically assassinated on February 21, 1965, at Harlem’s Audubon Ballroom. But did you know that just last week would have marked Malcolm X’s 100th birthday?

His legacy continues to inspire and has even been honored right here in Jersey City, featured in the Heroes of the World mural series on Merritt Street.

The NJCU Center for the Arts, Norva Alleyne, Pelonda Glover, and Jamel Gains are proud to present a ONE-DAY exclusive engagement of the hit show Remembering: A Healing Journey, A Legacy of Greatness at The Margaret Williams Theatre at NJCU on June 13, 2025.

Did you know Jersey City was the last stop on the Underground Railroad? From Jersey City’s waterfront, abolitionists used ferry and coal boats to help slaves cross the Hudson River—some continued their journey to Canada.

Harriet Tubman and William Still were key leaders in New Jersey’s abolitionist movement, but there were others. David Holden was the best-known abolitionist in Jersey City. His home at 79 Clifton Place, known as the “safe house,” still stands today.
