Abington Art Center, located in Jenkintown, 20 minutes by rail from the heart of Philadelphia was established in 1939 as the Old York Road Art Guild. In 1965, the Guild's separate elements were brought together as the non-profit entity Abington Art Center, which has resided in Alverthorpe Manor since it was donated to Abington Township in 1969. Rosenwald, son of Julius Rosenwald, the part-owner and CEO of Sears, Roebuck and Company. In 1939, he razed the old house to build the current art-deco-inspired, 52-room mansion designed by Ernest A. The Art Center’s Studio School wing of this unique building once housed Rosenwald's enormous collection of over 2,600 rare books and 24,000 prints, drawings, and manuscripts, which was donated to the Library of Congress and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Our rich history provides inspiration for AAC's mission to further arts and culture.

🌟 Upcoming Artist Talk 🌟

Abington Art Center is proud to host this artist talk with Art Behind Bars’ exhibition curator, and AAC Executive Director, Rosalie Guzofsky.

Art Behind Bars brings together the work of Michael Vandergrift, Luis Lopez, Brian Witham, and Josue Benitez, four incarcerated individuals serving sentences for serious crimes at the Federal Correctional Complex in Terre Haute, Indiana. Working within the profound physical and psychological constraints of incarceration, they have each found in art a space for expression, reflection, and possibility.

Please join us on Wednesday, October 7th 2026 from 6 – 8pm for an evening of fruitful discussion. Our talk will be held in our Kellner gallery. Free tea and light fare will be provided.

What happens when art becomes a pathway to reflection, self-expression, and transformation?

"Art Behind Bars" (ABB) presents the work of four artists—Michael Vandergrift, Bryan Witham, Luis Lopez, and Josue Benitez—who create art during their incarceration at the United States Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Their work offers a rare and deeply human perspective on life behind bars. These four men, each incarcerated for serious crimes, discovered through art a means to confront their experiences, explore their identities, and imagine the possibility of personal change.

One of the artists, Michael Vandergrift, is a Delaware County, Pennsylvania native, bringing an especially local connection to an exhibition that asks us to look beyond the labels of “inmate” or “offender” and consider the human capacity for creativity, introspection, accountability, and transformation.

🌟 What a beautiful Fall Equinox Workshop we had with Sondra Rosenberg.

We reflected on the profound balance that the Equinox represents while also acknowledging the importance of embracing change. After a walk on the grounds to the stone labyrinth and a short meditation, we created art based on what we had discussed and meditated on. Take a look at our workshop attendees lovely creations!

📍Stay tuned for upcoming workshops in our Studio School...
