To think I almost let my fear of this keep me from experiencing this.

Most people I told about this trip asked the same thing first:“But weren’t you scared of the bears?”

Honestly? Not really.

The bears felt wild and powerful, but somehow not scary in the way everyone expected them to be. They were just there in their world while we quietly observed. Plus, we had amazing and knowledgeable guides and .

Meanwhile, the thing that actually had my stomach in knots was the tiny float plane ride into camp.

No one asks about that part.

Maybe it hits a little differently when you’re a mom and your brain immediately jumps to everything that could go wrong when you leave your kids behind for an adventure like this.

So glad I didn’t let my fear stop me and looking forward to going back to bear camp one day!

A black bear’s sense of smell is estimated to be over 2,000 times stronger than ours.

Every pause and every lift of the nose means something.

Bull elk often thrash brush to decorate their antlers and show dominance... but sometimes, even nature's best display gets the cold shoulder. She was not interested in his show this time.

Fan Friday

I went to the Smokies for the bears, but was very surprised at how much I enjoyed shooting turkeys. The longer I studied them, the more interesting and beautiful | found them. I especially loved seeing their feathers illuminated by the morning light.

Moments like this look chaotic, but they’re anything but. Brown bears rely on timing, patience, and precision to make it count.

Captured in Katmai with Scott and Jackie Stone, who were incredible guides for this experience.

I’m truly honored to have been awarded 1st place in the Wildlife category for the Women’s Photography Circle 2026 contest. Grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it.

This image is exactly why I fell in love with wildlife photography. Real, raw, and completely unscripted moments that you can’t plan for and may never see again.

A heartfelt thank you to the sponsors and to the Women’s Photography Circle for supporting and uplifting this community. What makes this even more meaningful is their mission to raise funds for grants that help support and elevate women photographers.

And thank you to everyone who has followed along and encouraged me along the way. It truly means more than you know.
