Less than a couple weeks ago, I was standing on the edge of Hudson Bay watching polar bears in the wild. Not all that long ago, it felt like one of those experiences I would only ever dream about.

There's something a little surreal about coming home from a trip like this. You spend months planning and anticipating it, and then suddenly you're sitting at an airport gate with memory cards full of photographs and a head full of moments you're not quite ready to leave behind.

Of course I'm excited about the photographs. But I think what I'II remember most is everything surrounding them... the anticipation of every sighting, the people I shared it with, and that feeling of looking through my lens at a polar bear and thinking, I cannot believe I'm actually here.
I've realized more and more over the last few years how much I value experiences like this. The photographs eventually become part of my portfolio, but the experience of making them becomes part of me.

My first polar bear in the wild. 🤍

I’ve imagined what it would feel like to see one in its natural habitat, but nothing quite prepares you for that first glimpse of white against the dark rocks of the Hudson Bay coastline.

After years of photographing wildlife, there are still moments that completely stop me in my tracks. This was one of them.

Apex predators...but with golden retriever energy.

Watching these two polar bear cubs play in the waters of Hudson Bay, I couldn't get over how much they reminded me of puppies.
Definitely one of my favorite moments from Churchill.

We recently returned from an unforgettable family road trip through several national parks, and Yellowstone completely stole my heart.

Everywhere we turned, there were bison. By the end of the trip, my family probably thought I’d stop photographing them…

They were wrong. 😄

Every encounter was different, and I loved every minute of it.

I love getting up before everyone else when we travel.
While my family was still sleeping, I grabbed a cup of coffee and stepped outside to enjoy the morning.
Within minutes, I had a mule deer, a chipmunk, and a marmot keeping me company.
Safe to say... the Black Hills know how to do mornings.

When salmon are abundant, brown bears can afford to be selective. This bear picked up one fish, decided it wasn’t good enough, and went looking for a better option. Nature has a way of raising standards when there’s plenty to choose from.
