Happy 50th Anniversary, Obed Wild & Scenic River!
On October 12, 1976, Obed Wild & Scenic River was established to preserve one of the last free-flowing, wild river systems in the Eastern United States. The river systems and gorges within the park are important because of their wild and primitive character, exceptional waters, and viewsheds that showcase the beauty of the Cumberland Plateau in much the same way as it could have been experienced for thousands of years.
Today, when we sit at our favorite locations in the park and quietly contemplate the lives of those who passed by here before us; Native Americans, long hunters, explorers, and settlers, their tracks may be gone, but the reasons they found themselves here remain. When we visit the park, we follow in their footsteps.
Whether you visit to go whitewater paddling, rock climbing, dark sky viewing, fishing, or simply enjoying the view, you have found yourself here. You have found the spirit of Obed Wild & Scenic River.
