If Death Comes for Me

If death comes for me,
tell him I was not running.
Tell him I had already laid my body down
inside the noise.

And if he asks what I wanted,
say I wanted less—
less static in my head,
less performing my wounds for survival,
less pretending pain was a lesson
instead of a leak I never stopped bleeding from.

Tell him I was tired
of justifying my presence,
tired of earning breath,
tired of making sense of wounds
that never asked to be lessons.

And if he wonders why I was empty,
tell him life scooped me clean,
wrung me out,
and left me standing
as proof that endurance
is not the same as living.
