In honor of one of our favorites on President’s Day, we are sharing our portrait of George Washington. It is an early copy of the famous Stuart painting of Washington. This is a giclee (she-clay) copy from France, circa 1800 on canvas.
Giclee’s are high quality first copies of famous paintings and are usually of notable historic figures or landscapes. When people come in the study, they almost always comment on this portrait.

*** The original Athenaeum Portrait, also known as The Athenaeum, is an unfinished painting by Gilbert Stuart of George Washington. Created in 1796, it is Stuart’s most notable work. The painting depicts Washington at age 64, about three years before his death. George and Martha considered it to be the closest likeness of him ever produced. Stuart deliberately left it unfinished so he could reproduce copies from it. The Washington’s never received it despite many attempts from Martha asking for it to be completed. This is the image that served for the engraving that would be used for Washington’s portrait on the United States one-dollar bill. Today, it is housed and can be viewed at the Boston Gallery Museum of Fine Arts. ***
