Thank you to the nearly 500 guests who joined us for our 27th Anniversary Community Day at The Ritz Theatre & Museum. From exhibits and live entertainment to community connections, the day was a true celebration of culture, history, and heritage.

A special thank you to DeDe McGuire of DeDe in the Morning for hosting an unforgettable VIP experience. We were also honored to have Councilman Rahman K. Johnson, Ph.D. present DeDe with a City of Jacksonville proclamation recognizing her impact and service to the community.

As we prepare for an exciting new chapter, we're grateful to everyone who helped make this milestone celebration so special. Thank you for 27 years of preserving history, celebrating culture, and bringing community together.

Big changes are coming to the Ritz Theatre & Museum.

The Museum is preparing for its most significant exhibit renovation in more than a decade, a $2.2 million investment that will transform the permanent exhibit experience for future generations while continuing to honor the rich history and culture of LaVilla.

To prepare for these exciting upgrades, the permanent museum exhibit will temporarily close on September 21, 2026.

Before then, we invite you to visit, explore the galleries, and experience the stories that have inspired our community for more than 26 years.

While the permanent exhibit is closed, the Ritz Theatre & Museum will remain open and active with concerts, performances, special exhibitions, educational programs, and community events.

A new chapter begins soon. Come experience the Museum before the transformation starts.

Happy Labor Day! Today, we honor the legacy of A. Philip Randolph and the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. The first Black-led labor union to win a collective bargaining agreement.

Before Randolph shook up national labor rights, he grew up right here in Jacksonville. Our city’s vibrant, industrial African American community shaped his early understanding of systemic racism and economic justice, laying the foundation for a movement that permanently transformed American labor and civil rights.

Throughout the first half of the 20th Century, the Pullman Company was one of the largest employers of African Americans, but the pay and treatment they endured on the job were less than desirable. The BSCP was instrumental in securing dignified working conditions and fair wages for Pullman Porters.

This certificate of affiliation, signed by Randolph, and these tools of the trade are just a few of the incredible objects in our collection that help tell the story of the working class in LaVilla and Jacksonville’s role in transportation as the gateway to Florida. Let's remember that the fight for fair wages, dignity, and worker safety was built on the shoulders of Black labor leaders.
