👗✨ **A QUESTION I GET ASKED OFTEN:** ✨👗

**“Why did they measure me for my bridesmaid dress if I still need alterations when I get it?”**

This is a GREAT question, and I want to explain why! ❤️

When you order a bridesmaid dress, the bridal shop has a **size chart for each bridesmaid dress manufacturer** they carry.

The shop will measure you and then compare your measurements to that particular designer's size chart. They order the size that **best fits your measurements according to the manufacturer's chart.**

👉 **BUT — the dress is NOT being custom-made to your measurements.**

Bridesmaid dresses are made using **standard sizes**, just like other clothing.

The bridal shop has to look at your measurements and choose the size that will accommodate your **largest measurement**.

For example:

👗 You may measure like a **size 8 through your bust and waist**, but if you're larger through your hips, the dress may need to be ordered in a **size 10 or even 12** so it will fit properly through the hips.

Once you receive the dress, the **bodice and/or waist can then be altered to fit you properly.**

And remember…

💕 **WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT BODY SHAPES!**

Some women carry more through their:
• Bust
• Waist
• Hips
• Torso
• Shoulders

That's completely normal!

The goal when ordering your bridesmaid dress is to make sure you can **get the dress ON and have enough room where you need it.** Then alterations can shape the dress to fit YOUR unique body.

# # # 👗 AND THEN THERE'S HEIGHT!

Most bridesmaid dresses are designed around a model who is approximately **5'9"**.

Most of us aren't 5'9"! 😂

So it's very common to need:
✂️ A hem
✂️ Straps shortened
✂️ Bodice adjustments
✂️ Waist adjustments
✂️ Other fitting adjustments

# # # ❤️ SO PLEASE DON'T THINK SOMETHING WENT WRONG!

Needing alterations **does NOT mean the bridal shop ordered the wrong size.**

Most of the time, it simply means the dress was ordered in the size that best accommodates your measurements, and now it needs to be **customized to your individual body.**

That's exactly what alterations are for! ✂️❤️

When bringing **regular street clothes** to Sewing by Karen for alterations, please make sure they are **washed first!**

And yes...this applies whether the item is:

🆕 Brand new
👗 Something you've had hanging in your closet
🧥 Something you've pulled out for the first time in months

Why?

Washing the garment first allows the fabric to:

✨ Shrink, if it's going to shrink
✨ Relax into its natural shape
✨ Release wrinkles and creases
✨ Settle before we begin measuring and fitting

This helps me get the **most accurate fit possible** during your appointment.

The last thing we want is to alter a garment perfectly...only to have it change shape or shrink after you wash it at home! 😳

💕 **So before you bring your everyday clothes in for alterations:**

**Wash them. Dry them. Bring them clean and ready for your fitting.** 🧼🧵

A little preparation beforehand can make a BIG difference in the final fit! ❤️
