Leaving your garden a little messy this winter might be the kindest thing you do for your local bird population. Here are nine plants worth leaving standing instead of cutting back once the growing season ends.

Coneflowers hold onto their seed heads long after the petals fade, and goldfinches in particular love perching on those spiky cones to pick out the seeds. Black-eyed Susans work the same way, offering up seed heads that chickadees and other small songbirds will visit throughout the cold months. Sunflowers, whether the towering garden variety or smaller cultivars, produce some of the most calorie-dense seeds around, which makes them a magnet for finches and cardinals when natural food sources are scarce.

Joe-Pye W**d is often overlooked, but its fluffy dried seed heads attract sparrows and juncos, and the hollow stems can double as shelter for overwintering insects, which in turn feeds birds later in the season. Goldenrod gets blamed for allergies it doesn't actually cause, but its seed clusters are a favorite of chickadees, and the plant supports beneficial insects nearly all year. Asters bloom late and hold their seed heads into winter, giving birds a food source right when other options are running out.

Ornamental grasses like Switchgrass and Little Bluestem might be the most valuable plants on this list. According to the National Wildlife Federation, native grasses left standing through winter provide both seed and critical shelter, since birds will tuck into the dense clumps to escape wind and predators on the coldest nights. Sedum, especially the taller varieties, dries into rust colored seed heads that finches will happily forage from well into the New Year.

The Audubon Society has long encouraged gardeners to resist the urge to tidy up too early, since a "messy" fall garden functions as a natural bird feeder and insect hotel rolled into one. Cutting everything back to bare soil in October removes both a food source and winter habitat right when birds need it most.

If you are planning your beds for next year, all of these plants perform well across a wide range of hardiness zones. Coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, asters, and switchgrass are reliable from about zone 3 through zone 9, sunflowers and goldenrod thrive in zones 3 through 10, Joe-Pye W**d and little bluestem do well in zones 3 through 9, and sedum is one of the toughest of the bunch, hardy from zone 3 through 10 depending on the variety.

So this fall, put the pruners down a little earlier than usual. Your garden will thank you in spring, and the birds will thank you all winter long ๐Ÿฆ๐ŸŒพ
