Today is a pretty special day in Hawkins.

In the final moments of Stranger Things, the town begins to come back to life on Memorial Day weekend. Summer arrives, the storefronts reopen, and after everything Hawkins has been through, there’s finally this feeling that the town is healing and moving forward again.

And today, in real life, it’s actually Memorial Day.

Walking through downtown Hawkins today — seeing Melvald’s General Store, RadioShack, and all the familiar storefronts — feels a little surreal. The beginning of summer. Small-town America waking back up again. Hawkins coming back to life.

If there was ever a perfect day to visit Hawkins, this might be it.

This might surprise you, but Jackson Drugs was here long before Melvald’s. If you look closely, you’ll notice the creative direction for Melvald’s General Store came right off the heels of the original Jackson Drugs sign.

Jackson even had its own RadioShack back in the day, and there’s still a lot of local lore surrounding the original owners. In fact, many longtime locals can still tell stories about them. The same man who owned the drugstore also owned the RadioShack, tying together two iconic pieces of downtown Jackson history.

It’s details like these that make exploring Hawkins so special — the real history behind the filming locations often feels just as fascinating as the show itself.
