Hogan House Restoration Project

Hogan House Restoration Project Follow our progress as we restore this sleeping country gem into the captivating entertaining home it was originally built to be.

We've decided to start a page to document the progress of the "Hogan House" , as we lovingly call, to keep all of our friends informed. We will come up with an official market name at some point in the future. And of course when it's finished, you'll all be invited to come visit. :-) ....

Once finished it will be available to be leased for Weddings, Concerts, Corporate Functions, Family Gatherin

gs, Parties, etc. The 5000 square foot home, built in 1921, currently has 7 bedrooms, 5 baths, a big beautiful great room and spacious dining room with high ceilings, a fireplace and two sets of french doors leading to the patio. We plan to set up 3-4 rooms with beds and leave the others available for sitting rooms and gathering spaces. There is also a Large garage building that we haven't decided what to use it for. The home sits in the middle of 25 beautiful country acres, surrounded by old magnolia trees and majestic long leaf pines. Azaleas and dogwoods fill in the spaces below. Just beyond the pine borders are hay fields. Its a perfect, quiet country retreat.

So I haven't been keeping Everyone updated... sorry. We had the floors refinished and they turned out beautifully. Each room is unique. The hanging has lantern was installed. The garage building got a face lift and looks wonderful. We Uncovered some fun black and white tile upstairs and removed the green s**g carpet. A few furry friends made their way into the dining room to keep an eye on everyone. And Finally getting beds set up. Hope to have the house available for rent by the end of the month. ... and maybe in time for a little Halloween Fun!

Holy storm damage!! Just kidding. John Zoppi has moved on to repairing the brick lattice work. While it looked a little old and in need of some love, we were surprised when John grabbed a hold of the top two rows and was able to sway the lattice back and forth! So down they went!

He tore the bricks down until he got to good sturdy bricks then started building back up. On the back right hand side of the patio a section of lattice had been filled in. Chuck concluded that there was originally a second set of steps there. So we are opening that section back up and adding the steps back. John was able to use some of the bricks from that section to replace damaged bricks in the lattice.

First on the repair list was to address the chimneys. We had a few loose bricks and a good bit of crumbly mortar. Zoppi Construction has been working on 3 of the 5 chimneys the last two weeks. Chuck climbed up a couple of times to check out the progress. ... Luckily there were several layers of old bricks inside the chimney so we were able to replace the inside layer with fill bricks and use the old bricks to add a couple extra vertical layers to the chimney tops and give it a little design element. John Zoppi has done a great job repairing the chimneys, and dressing them up while keeping them old looking. We will add decorative chimney caps later. Probable black metal and perhaps copper for the chimney in the Center. We will have to paint all the chimneys later to help preserve the old mortar. All fireplaces have gas logs at the moment but will be in good enough shape that we will be able to convert them to wood burning if we ever want to. ... What do you think- should we paint the chimneys white or red?

Jan 31- Day 2 of "Operation Teach the Kids how to Work!" ... A sunny day with temps in the 60's is perfect for pressure washing and more limb trimming. The boys tackled removing "threatening" magnolia limbs from the roof in the back, and cutting a couple of encroaching trees from the house, while we raked and pressured washed the front. ..... amazing- the house really was white under all that dirt!

So we bought this sleeping beauty back in November. The bushes were overgrown, the patios a little uneven, the white walls were a little on the green and brown side but nothing a little elbow grease could take care of. In January we had a sunny Saturday and took the kids over for a day of yard clean up. A chainsaw, some hedge trimmers, and two giant loads of brush later- you can actually see the house!... unfortunately we cut the lower limbs from the magnolia and now the kids are too short to climb it! Oops!
