One chaotic 30×6’ bed down… one more to go!

I’ve been dreaming of TWO giant 30×4’ flower beds… one is already alive with possibility, and the second is calling my name.
Swipe through my before → in-between → after photos and see the messy magic unfold.
This isn’t just dumping compost on top of whatever I found lying around… this is living soil in the making.

Lasagna Soil Method vs “dump compost”
• Lasagna Method:
• Layer cardboard → blocks weeds, smothers ivy
• Add decomposable mulch (leaves, hay, twigs) → feeds microbes
• Water → kickstarts decomposition
• Top with 4” compost → soil party begins (will do this after the second bed is prepped too)
• Builds nutrient-rich, airy, living soil over time
• Dump & Hope Method:
• Spread compost on top of existing material
• Little structure, weeds survive
• Slower microbial action, less aeration
• Soil life = meh
• Flowers may struggle vs. thriving bed

🌸 Cosmos swaying in the breeze
🌺 Zinnias exploding with color
One messy bed today → July glory tomorrow

My cool loving weather beggies and flowers are all set up in my snugs! All 19 of them 🫣🥰 Trying to not check on them everyday is very hard! After that wind came theough the other night i checked them! Yay! The Bok Choy is sprouted❤️ a new crop for this year for both my daighters who love it! Cant wait to transplant them in a few weeks!

Thank you to Farida Sober who gave me my first mention by a person that is not a “friend!” She is the reason I started seed snails in the first place last year. This was my first video about the snug. I want to give credit for the name snug to Frankie Lou Fuller. However my brain put the two ideas together independently. Not enough room in my home to start a mini flower farm while also growing fresh produce for the family! 🥰

What is a snug, you may ask! It’s a seed snail (a very efficient form of starting seeds) that is placed in a milk jug and tapped up. Then left outside during the cold season to germinate inside the mini greenhouse habitat that the snug provides! Seedling are stronger, need no hardening off but a day of taking of the tape of the jug to let air flow through. Their roots are established, strong and 3-4” long. They’re space saving, energy saving both electric (no grow lights of heating pads) and also work saving (contending daily.). Just check in on them weekly to see how they’re doing maybe add a little water or move them to a shady spot if it gets too warm with a warm spell. That’s it! Try it, I will never go back to trays!

Apparently even my seedlings need a lesson plan. 🌱

Last year I learned some big lessons:
• labels matter
• saved seeds can surprise you
• staggering seedlings is important

Sharing the plan → plant → reflect process that actually helps gardeners get better each season.

I love the idea of repurposing things that are thrown away. It’s one way we can help our planet! This thrifted pasta strainer with a lid(very important to keep the critters out) is a great in garden composter! Over the winter I’ve put my scraps in and put the leaves and lid back on and I got black gold soil! I highly recommend it! Come back for other ways to implement this in ground composting next week!

Last year, was my first year trying this method after many of seed starting in trays. The timing, space, taking tending to, the electricity used for grow lights and hardening off all a little overwhelming at times! This method so successful! So easy and stress free! Try the Snug 🥰😝
