Let's talk cake!
Being a sister company to The Velveteen Cake Co., we offer cakes and cake floral design services as well!

Typically, floral placement is done by the cake designer, although some florists have been in charge of this as well. Fresh cut flower stems are wrapped carefully, then placed into the cake after it's assembled and placed at the venue. It's the very last step! Lucky for you, we're both!

Honestly, when the flowers are the finishing touch to the cake - it's typically when I allow that long held sigh of relief out.
"We made it, it's here, it's beautiful, it's DONE!"

To be a sustainable florist is to make choices that protect the earth, the environment, and the people on it.

This is part of our core values at Velveteen Florals.

Sustainable floristry is a practice that focuses on minimizing the environmental impact of floral design and production, encompassing everything from sourcing flowers to disposing of waste, with a focus on local, seasonal blooms, eco-friendly materials, and reducing waste.

Did you know that floral foam is actually plastic? The floral industry wastes SO much single use plastic, so we'd like to make an impact and remove as much waste as we can. If we do use plastic, it's re-usable time and time again!

We like to apply this in our floral business by using as many reusable product as we can, and working with non-toxic, sustainable products instead of the toxic-plastic floral foam!

Some of our favorite products to work with are:
- OshunPouch - 100% sustainable, biodegradable, and compostable, embodying a commitment to eco-conscious practices.
- Agrawool - It is made from basalt wool with plant-based, starch binders. It’s eco-friendly and biodegradable.
- Reusable mesh wire! Sometimes it will be coated to protect the glass vase it's in, but again - reusable and sustainable.

Hello! 👋

I'm Heather, cake designer at The Velveteen Cake Co. and freelance florist in Iron Mountain Michigan!

While I'm much more comfortable working behind the scenes than on social media - I'm definitely working on that!

So now, I just wanted to pop in and introduce myself - as well as let you all know what I will be offering now that I'm incorporating floral work into my offerings. 🤍

My entire life I've always had a passion for flowers. I had even considered being a florist as a child. Instead, I went into childcare development in hopes of becoming a Kindergarten teacher.
After becoming a mother and having 3 beautiful children of my own, I got into baking instead.

After all of that, I still loved everything floral - and cherished the arrangement's my husband would get me for all the wonderful occasions. But now, I can't seem to get away from floral's. Incorporating them into as many cakes as I could, and even learning how to make gum paste and wafer paper florals - I need more. Gardening, wasn't enough either!
