How do you choose the right photographer for your big day when it seems like the options are endless? Planning your wedding is a huge task, and choosing the right photographer can feel overwhelming.
I asked Brooklyn Landers, owner & lead photographer at BeeKay Photography for some insider tips that you may not see on every checklist. She says, "It's not just about pretty photos, it's about the full experience." With over 5 years of experience photographing weddings, couples & growing families, she focuses on creating a relaxed and genuine experience that prioritizes story, emotion & connection. Her work blends documentary-style storytelling with a warm, polished finish, ensuring each gallery feels personal and timeless. Brooklyn believes that every couples deserves to feel seen, celebrated & supported from the first email to the final gallery delivery.
•Pay attention to the way they tell stories.
-Look through full wedding galleries, not just highlight reels. Do the images feel like a cohesive story? Can you follow the emotion of the day? You want someone who captures the big and small moments in a way that feels true to you.
•Ask how they prep before the big day.
-A good photographer doesn't just show up on your wedding day. They guide you through timeliness, light, posing references, and backup plans. If you leave a consultation feeling more confident than when you arrived, that's a great sign.
•Look for someone who knows when to lead and when to fade into the background.
-There will be times to step in and guide, but the best photographers know how to blend in and let real moments unfold.
•Watch how they interact with guests in their photos.
-Do people look comfortable, joyful, and natural? That’s not just luck. That’s someone with people skills, empathy, and the ability to build trust quickly.
•Ask how they approach you two specifically.
-Do they send questionnaires or chat with you in detail? Do they ask about your connection, your personalities, or what matters most to you on the day? You deserve more than a cookie-cutter approach.
•Pay attention to how you feel around them.
-This one’s underrated. You’ll spend more
time with your photographer than almost anyone else on your wedding day. Choose someone who makes you feel safe, seen, and excited to be yourself.
•Ask about their philosophy on editing.
-Do they aim to preserve true-to-life tones and
emotions, or do they lean heavily on filters and trendy presets? A consistent, clean editing style typically ensures that your photos will remain timeless years from now.
•Ask to see non-ideal situations.
-Rainy days, indoor ceremonies, flash receptions, or awkward family dynamics; how do they handle those? You want someone who can creatively and calmly adapt to the real-life chaos of a wedding.
•Make sure you feel like a person, not a transaction.
-You’re trusting someone with your memories. If their communication feels personal, their process feels intentional, and their energy feels like a good fit, you’re likely in good hands.
