A Timeless Landmark in Idabel's Cultural Landscape
Idabel, Oklahoma is a town steeped in rich history has its cultural heartbeat tied to the iconic Lyric Theatre. Originally built in 1916, the Lyric first opened its doors on April 23, 1917, with Mary Pickford's "Less Than the Dust" gracing the silver screen. The theatre quickly became a beloved venue for the town, hosting memorable cinematic moments for decades.
The original Lyric Theatre concluded its run on August 18, 1947, after presenting "The Razor's Edge" starring Tyrone Power. The very next evening, Idabel welcomed the second Lyric Theatre—a fresh venue to continue its legacy. With its grand opening on July 30, 1948, featuring titles such as "Crossed Trails" and "Perilous Waters," the new theatre delighted residents anew.
However, tragedy struck in 1956 when the second Lyric Theatre was destroyed by a devastating fire. Once known as “fireproof,” the blaze ended an era for this cherished landmark.
Today, the Lyric Theatre has been repurposed as an event and banquet hall, evolving into a community space that bridges its storied past with contemporary use. From hosting film screenings to serving as a hub for gatherings, the Lyric stands as a testament to Idabel's enduring spirit and dedication to preserving local history.
