A New Chapter for Odds & Ends Events ❤️
With the recent announcement in the paper that the Matthes family is officially the owner of LaRoy's Event Center and Odds & Ends Events, I’ve found myself looking back at how this crazy little dream even began, and at all the people who helped turn it into what it is today.
Back in 2016, I was researching how to someday own and operate my own event venue. I knew business and sales, but quickly realized I didn't actually know the ins and outs of putting on an event. So I started helping friends with showers and celebrations, trying to learn everything I could.
I was also battling postpartum depression at the time, and looking back, I think I was searching for something that felt like me again, something I could build, work toward and be proud of outside of being a wife and mom.
Then my high school friend Molly called and asked me to help set up her friend's bridal shower.
That phone call changed my life.
Molly is an amazing artist, and was the creative one who could look at ordinary things and see something beautiful. I am creative too, but much more analytical. I was the salesperson, the logistics person and, usually, the muscle. 😂
Somehow, our two very different brains worked really well together.
And I loved it.
I knew I had found what I wanted to do with my life.
In 2017, I made us official and Odds and Ends Event Decorating, LLC was born.
We did an open house and two weddings that first year.
The next year, we did 12.
And then we grew.
As the business grew, so did my ambition. Looking back with almost ten years of perspective, I know there were times I put the business before our friendship. Eventually Molly and I went separate ways within the company, and there are things I would do so differently today.
Molly, I will forever be grateful to you. You helped me discover a career I absolutely love. There simply wouldn't be an Odds & Ends story without you. ❤️
And there is absolutely no version of this story without my husband, Rob.
Our decor collection started in our homes and Molly and her husband John, remodeled the room off of their garage as our first office to meet new clients. We felt so official! During this time, we increased our inventory and took over my mother-in-law's basement, but fast realized we were outgrowing our spaces too quickly. After much convincing, Rob built us a storage shed. I still laugh thinking about Molly climbing and straddling shelves in the dark and rain trying to find decor for an event. 😂
Then came three storage units, space at a venue in Tecumseh, and eventually the warehouse and office we have today at Matthes Tree Farm.
But Rob gave me so much more than somewhere to store our stuff.
Our boys were only two years old and four months old when this started. Rob was the one financially supporting our family while I poured our money into inventory and tried to build a business that wasn't making us money yet.
He built arches. He loaded trailers. He helped with setups and teardowns. And while I worked countless nights and weekends, he was home raising our babies.
He was, and still is my backbone.
I may have had the dream, but he gave me the ability to chase it. ❤️
Then, in October 2018, Molly and I hired our very first employee, Deidra.
Almost eight years later, she's STILL here and somehow still willing to deal with me. 😂
She has been through nearly every version of Odds & Ends, including all the growth, chaos, long nights, changes, mistakes, laughs, tears and more crazy ideas than either of us could count.
She didn't join the finished version of this company.
She helped build it.
And today, she's still beside us as our Lead Decorator and every other role there is while teaching full time. ❤️
But Deidra was only the beginning.
Over the years, this little business became a team.
And I cannot talk about the success of Odds & Ends without talking about our team and every person who has worked and is currently working for us.
Our office staff keeps this place running every single day. Breanna, our Office Manager, works full-time doing an enormous amount of what once fell solely on my shoulders and somehow keeps me and everyone else moving in the right direction. Nikki, Amy, Kinsey, Deidra, Chelsea, and the rest of our leadership team carry responsibilities that allow this company to operate at the level it does today.
Then there are our other venue leads, florists, coordinators, rental crew, waitstaff, bartenders, cleaners, and everyone behind the scenes.
They are the ones helping load trailers, setting tables, transforming rooms, pouring drinks, calming nervous couples, moving chairs, fixing problems, working late-night tear-downs and doing the thousand little things our clients may never see.
Some have been with us for years. Some were part of our story for only a season.
Every single one of them helped build Odds & Ends.
Molly and I may have started this, but WE are all Odds & Ends. ❤️
And then there is the Matthes family.
In 2017, we literally went knocking on doors introducing our tiny decorating company to local venues.
One of those doors was Matthes Tree Farm.
They were just beginning to host weddings and events, and within about a year we weren't only decorating there anymore, we were giving tours, helping run events and finally learning the venue side of the industry I originally set out to learn.
Almost a decade later, I'm still one of the Venue Managers at Matthes Tree Farm.
In 2020, I took over the decorating company from my partnership with Molly and went on my own as founder of Odds & Ends Events, LLC. What started as simple decorating company grew into decor, rentals, coordination, waitstaff, mobile bartending and venue management, serving clients throughout Michigan and Ohio.
Then, in 2023, another chapter began.
I sold the Odds & Ends name, staff and inventory assets to the owners of Matthes Tree Farm, while retaining my original LLC under a different name. I entered into a three-year contract to continue leading Odds & Ends as its Founder & CEO.
And now, that ownership transition has officially been announced.
The full-circle moment isn't lost on me:
The family whose door I knocked on in 2017 asking them to take a chance on our little company eventually believed in what we built enough to buy it.
Today, I also help manage LaRoy's Event Center, which Odds & Ends is built into both venues, and the Matthes family has built us a barn that houses our inventory and offices.
Sometimes I stand in that barn and think about where we started. Decor piled in our homes and us climbing around in the little shed in the dark. 😂
It's pretty incredible.
So yes, Odds & Ends Events has new ownership, but I don't plan on going anywhere anytime soon.
I'm still here helping co-lead our team, co-managing our venues, working with our couples and helping guide this company into its next chapter.
And this announcement felt like the perfect time to acknowledge the greatest lesson this journey has taught me:
You don't build something like this alone.
Molly helped me find the dream.
My husband, Rob gave me the foundation and freedom to chase it.
Deidra took a chance on us and helped build it.
Breanna, Nikki, Amy, Kinsey and our leadership team help carry it every day.
Our decorators, coordinators, office staff, rental crew, bartenders, waitstaff and every employee, past and present, turned it into something bigger than I ever could have created by myself.
The Matthes family believed in it, helped it grow and ultimately invested in its future.
And hundreds of clients trusted all of us with some of the biggest moments of their lives.
Two weddings became hundreds.
A basement became a shed.
A shed became storage units.
Storage units became a warehouse.
Two friends became an entire team.
A hobby became a career.
And a door we knocked on became a partnership.
I've made mistakes. I've learned many lessons the hard way. I've grown as a businesswoman, leader, wife, mother, friend and person.
And after almost a decade, I've learned that success isn't only about what you build.
It's remembering the people who helped you build it. ❤️
So to Molly, Rob, Deidra, Breanna, Nikki, Amy, Kinsey, the Matthes family, every single person who has ever been part of our team, our vendors and venues, our families who have sacrificed time with us, and every client who trusted us....
