What a fabulous Festival of the Voice again this year! So much musical talent (vocal and instrumental) comes together in the little town of Phoenicia, NY, for a truly eclectic series of performances, discussions, and workshops.

I was thrilled to be able to do the flowers for the VIP reception tent again. The first picture below is one of the flower arrangements for the first night's reception. The other 2 pictures are for the gala night's reception but are shown inside rather than in the tent as it was pouring at the time I did them.

Here's the same structure as the cymbidiums orchids but with white carnations. Some brides love the soft femininity of the carnations as well as the scent.

Had a great time a bridal expo yesterday. Met a lot of future brides and their grooms. The bridal bouquet shown here is one of the ones that gets the most questions and creates the most excitement. The brides love the more traditional look shown in the other photos but this is something different and they love how elegant it is as well as how light it is.

I was the guest presenter at the Clematis Garden Club's spring tea earlier this month and had a great time. Eight flower arrangements in just over an hour meant a lot of up-front preparation and arranging quickly during the presentation. I've attached some pictures that show the arrangements that I did at the tea.

The first one shows several of the arrangements. The one in front looks like a woodland garden and contains mixed greens, moss, and some spectacular ranunculus. To the left is an arrangement of pink sweet peas and miniature pink calla lilies. To the right is a small part of the basket arrangement shown in the second picture. The second picture also has a silver florist bucket with flowering peach (from our yard!) and some pink lisiantus. The third picture is of French tulip circled with umbrella fern and tied with silver wire. Although you can't see it, the bouquet is sitting in a glass vase with silver-colored stones.

Busy holiday season but here are the pictures of the arrangements that I took to a bridal expo in November. I prefer to do mostly European style deign and all of the bridal designs here are in that style. I absolutely love the white one with Phalaenopsis orchids attached to silver wires. It moves beautifully as you walk and the boutonniere is such fun

The green Cymbidium orchids are on a wire collar that I made myself and it is extremely lightweight.

The other arrangements are a little more traditional but still have a European influence.

This is the season to look for flowers in your garden for a weekly flower arrangement. Garden flowers last very well if cut in the morning and allowed to sit in water for a few hours before arranging them. Don't forget to look at some of the smaller flowers or the flowers in your herb garden. They look great in smaller arrangements.

This arrangement is simple: black-eyed susans (rudbeckai) and nasturtiums. (Nasturtiums are edible and the flowers add a wonderful splash of color to salad.)

Here are pictures of the two more modern arrangements I did for the Festival of the Voice. The tall white one is constructed of mitsumata branches held in place with candle wax. The flowers are either in glass tubes or in water at the base of the wax disc.

Both arrangements lasted well in the heat so I brought them home and they look pretty good in a home setting. Not quite sure, though, what Bill's Great-aunt Marry would have made of the arrangement.

Wow.just finished providing the flowers for the Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice. Great people and fabulous music!

I did four different arrangements for the VIP reception tents. The ones shown in this posting are from the opening day. They are more traditional in nature. I'll post the more modern ones that were in place for the Friday & Saturday events tomorrow.

The event is held outdoors and the temperatures topped 90 degrees on the first day. It's tough to keep flowers from wilting in that kind of heat, even with plenty of water and ice cubes.

But, being outdoors, i had help. If you look closely at the last two pictures, you'll see a hummingbird hawk-moth and a yellow swallowtail butterfly.

June 1 - Flower Arrangement of the Week - The rain certainly took a toll on the peonies but they have such a short season that I couldn't resist waiting for the rains to end to find a few peonies that weren't in horrible shape.

When picking peonies for an arrangement, make sure you get some buds that are partially open. They will continue to open during the week. Really tight buds won't open but they had a nice contrast to the softness of the flowers so include a few of those.

I like to put peonies in a round vase - this one is from Mikasa - but you face the difficulty of the stems staying in place. Put is some decorative marbles and that should hold the stems nicely. Put a layer of the marbles on the bottom, arrange the flowers, and then gently pour in some more marbles to further hold the stems in place. I used a mixture of clear, white, and silver marbles in this arrangement but you could also use colored ones that match the flowers.

May 18 - Flower Arrangement of the Week - Hard to decide this week with everything that is coming into bloom. but I decided to go with a tried and true grouping with flowers from the shop. Three blue delphinium in a bud vase with some bear grass and a little collar of galax leaves. The bud vase has been lined with an aspidistra leave to hide the stems.

Weekly Flower Arrangement - May 11, 2015

Flowers make such a difference in a home or office that everyone should get in the habit of making a small arrangement at the beginning of the week and enjoying it throughout the week.

No excuse for not having one this time of year with everything that is springing into bloom. This arrangement was as simple as walking out the back door and cutting a few stems of lilacs from the 5 huge bushes that line the back of the house. Find a vase, trim of the leaves that would be below the water line, clip the lilacs to a height that you like, and put them in the vase. Easy as that!

Took part in a wedding expo on Saturday at the Cornell Street Studios in Kingston, NY. Lot of work but also a lot of fun.

The theme was Brooklyn BoHo chic with unexpected artistic touches so i went with European designs for the two bridal arrangements. One was a mass of variegated carnations enclosed with beaded wire. Meant for a bride wearing a full-skirted gown. The little girls who attended with their families loved it! The other design includes phalenopsis orchids and astilbe on yarn-covered disks and with yarn streamers. different but well-received. I'm going to try it again in a green & white and without the streamers. Should be a totally different effect.
