A SALUTE TO A WOMAN OF FAITH, FAMILY, and FULFILLMENT -
Mrs. Betty Dagons a thirty-five year breast cancer survivor gives all her praises to God for continuous blessings on the breast cancer battle field.
HERSTORY
One evening in January 1988, after having a conversation with family and friends about breast cancer she wondered if that was a sign from God. On the drive home she rubbed under her left breast and discovered her lump. On February 4, 1988, Betty was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer. Betty relying on her faith and her supporting family and friends knew there was no time to waste. Betty immediately had surgery the next day February 5th, ironically her 40th birthday. Betty stated she remembers vividly as if it was yesterday noting there was snow on the ground at her Hattiesburg, Mississippi home. Betty never had a mammogram nor did self exams. During those day you were only expected to have mammograms if there was a family history, you were forty years old or older, or there was an illness present. At the time, Betty did not meet those criteria She was the first in her family to be diagnosed and since her diagnosis there has not been anyone in her family. Betty lives each day under the present of God and works with her church and surrounding communities informing both women and men they can be a pillar of strength fighting a good fight.
