Festival is an outdoor, open air 16th century European style art and entertainment festival combining outdoor theater, circus entertainment, arts and crafts marketplace, a jousting tournament, a feast fit for royalty, and much much more. The Carolina Renaissance Festival was introduced in 1994 with six acres of exhibits, attractions and entertainment. The event has grown into a 25 acre theme park filled with charming cottages and castles, kitchens and pubs, and a most unusual collection of people powered rides and games of skill. The Carolina event has grown to be one of the largest of the Renaissance fairs nationwide. Tree lined lanes are filled with over 140 purveyors of crafts and food, and non-stop music and comedy shows are presented on 16 stages every event day. This is one of the most interactive entertainment shows ever created with wonderful amusements and antics ongoing all around you! You can sit back and watch, or you can become a part of the action, surrounded by over 500 costumed characters roaming the festival village. The village lanes are full of peasants singing sea-faring songs and street entertainers surprising you with tall tales and tricks, each with a role to play. You can experience the clashing of armor and the thundering of hooves daily with full combat jousts at the Queen's Tournament Arena.

As we move into the new year we want to take a moment to reflect on this amazing career we’ve been given and what the future holds.

•2025 will be our last year performing•

Don Juan and Miguel became a duo in 1981 at King Richard’s Faire in Kenosha WI. Jose hired Doug to follow him around with a guitar while he wooed women as Don Juan, Doug of course agreed but forgot to mention that he couldn’t play guitar. They quickly pivoted into Miguel being Don Juan’s manservant and carrying around a large sack full of picnic fixings that he could set up for impromptu romantic moments. As more character dynamic was built and sword fighting was added the show progressed to the duo we all know and love.

In 1986 Dakota was born, by 1993 she was a part of the show, cleaning props, holding targets, and helping to quickchange costumes backstage. As her whip skills grew so did her role as Esmeralda.

Here we are 44 years later. Don Juan and Miguel worked more than 15 festivals around the country, worked countless events with companies from Disney to NASCAR, made 3 short films, produced books and cds and dvds for themselves and others, they backed games and museums across multiple festivals, they pioneered a way for performers to make their renaissance festival career bigger than just the show. But sadly all things come to an end.

The loss of Doug last March was devastating. Not just for the show but for us as a family. We are grateful to the Arizona, Carolina, Scarborough, and Pennsylvania Renaissance Festivals for letting us (Jose and Dakota) fulfill contracts and perform as Don Juan & Esmeralda through 2024. We love this new show but from the start we knew it wasn’t something we would continue long term.

We are excited to spend one more season at each of these festival we love so much!

To all our fans, many of whom have become extended family, thank you for your support. Thank you for the laughter and joy you bring with you to each show. We look forward to seeing you all one last time in 2025.
