Down to Earth, a solo exhibition of mixed media works on canvas by Silver Street artist, Gabriela Monterroso.

As an intuitive painter, Gabriela Monterroso creates figures that highlight the beauty of the faded and withered. Through intentional layering, line work, and mark-making, she emulates the irreversible flow of life and reflects on faded beauty and the newly acquired charm that time gives.

Incorporating found paper and employing the qualities of the paint itself to create texture within her works, she achieves a more dimensional foundation. Monterroso then applies various mediums like charcoal, pastel, and graphite to enhance definition and depth. By alternating the process of collage and drawing, she lends a seamless blend of the two approaches to her works.

The artist writes: "Inspired by myths and earth elements, my figures are icons that offer a sense of tranquility and sympathetic magic. Disrupting the idea that the human body is separate from its environment, I rely on earth tones and natural pigments, older than us, to give insight and understanding of the natural force of ‘womanhood’ through decades and centuries. Simultaneously, persuaded by stories of a woman with horse traits who was feared to be able to move the earth through her force, my depiction of the horse is a creative expression of my own alter-ego and a reflection of the force within every woman."

Roj Rodriguez: Mi Sangre, an exhibition by Houston curator Gabriela Monterosso features photographic works that capture the small details associated with being “Mexicano”. Select works from the series will occupy the East Gallery of Silver Street Studios from August 11th through September 2nd.

From compelling micro-expressions to religious symbols, Roj Rodriguez's photographs show familiar and unexpected moments that invites us to form new perspectives. What started as a personal project to retrace his Mexican heritage became a photographic essay that documents his understanding of the Mexican culture on both sides of the US/Mexico Border. The result is a compelling collection of tradition and culture that proudly show the meaning of “Mexicanidad”: the quality of being Mexican.

Dance through Life presents a captivating body of work that explores the profound connection between life and dance. Katya Du Pond masterfully captures the essence of this confluence, taking viewers on an emotional journey through the three fundamental steps of a twirl and various dance poses.

Through a harmonious fusion of acrylic on canvas and mixed media elements, Du Pond engages viewers with color and motion, inviting them to reflect on their own life experiences and find inspiration in the beauty, resilience, and transformative power of the dance.

Sawyer Yards presents Stendhal or Pure Joy, a solo exhibition of paintings by Silver Street artist Rodrigo Aguilera. "Stendhal" refers to "Stendhal Syndrome", a psychosomatic, profound emotional and physical response to art objects, and works of great beauty.

Aguilera writes: “When you see and approach one of my paintings, you are in front of an abstract design's pictorial qualities, including color harmonies and delicate brush strokes. Then, by zooming out or stepping back, you will see a realistic image that brings all of the parts and fragments together, usually in the form of a portrait. This is why I call my artistic vision 'Abstrealism'. Abstract and figurative principles follow nature in that the parts form a whole. My reorganization process affirms that everything in creation has a place and a purpose. My wish is that you will perceive a sense of wholeness. My hope is that this approach brings you joy and touches your soul."

The exhibition will be on view from June 26th, through July 8th, 2023 in the East Gallery of Silver Street Studios at Sawyer Yards. A reception for the artist, along with a presentation and book signing will occur on Saturday, July 8 from 5 - 7 pm.

Join us tomorrow for Second Saturday Open Art Studios! Meet our artists and discover an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, jewelry, photography, and more. Winter Street Studios artists displaced by the fire will sell their work at the Market at Sawyer Yards.

We're happy to host the Crockett Advanced Orchestra Ensemble, Advanced Percussion Ensemble and the Primary Grades Dance Ensemble. Performances will take place from 11-noon. The Art Car Parade’s 3rd Place winner from Crockett Elementary will be on display too, “All Eyes on Me” by Claudia Elizondo and Crockett Wolves.

The artist reception for Geomet-Rumi: Love is the Light in the Heart will be held on Thursday, April 27th, from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. The evening will feature a recitation of Rumi’s poems in connection to the art, Persian Sufi music, dance, and light bites. Dance performances will start at 7:00 pm.

The 2022 Ice Meets Art event combines the thriving Silver Street artists' community with the tough, enthusiastic world of Houston hockey – with the goal of fundraising for our own Houston STARskaters. There will be live music, various food choices, beverages, and good spirits!

🏒 The STARskaters is a non-profit organization that offers sled hockey, skating therapy and ice experience to those with disabilities. The Silver Street Artists will donate 15% of all fine art sales to the STARskaters.

The FotoFest () Biennial 2022 central exhibition, If I Had a Hammer, considers the ways artists utilize images to unpack the ideological underpinnings that inspire collective cultural movements around the globe. The reception takes place at Silver Street Studios with remarks by Biennial curators Steven Evans, Max Fields, and Amy Sadao, with artists featured in the exhibition.
