Shriekback was founded by members of notable post-punk bands, Barry Andrews was formerly of XTC and the League of Gentlemen, and Dave Allen came from Gang of Four. Carl Marsh, from Out on Blue Six, soon completed the initial line-up.
Their breakthrough came with the 1985 album Oil and Gold, which included their most popular song, "Nemesis". "Nemesis" gained wide airplay on indie and college radio and was featured in the Michael Mann film Manhunter.
