Meet Vicky Cakes - The First Black-owned Pancake Mix in Major Retail

[DALLAS, TEXAS, May 18, 2021] Aunt Jemima, who? Vicky Cakes® is America’s new darling vegan pancake mix, who is quickly emerging as the leader in vegan pancake and waffle mix.

After Quaker Oats announced retiring the culturally insensitive brand Aunt Jemima, consumers flocked to Vicky Cakes®, who then sold over 184,000 bags of pancake mix, grossing over half a million dollars in sales, and featured by Beyonce, The Food Network, WeBuyBlack, Good Morning America, Cosmopolitan, Complex, and more. They have also been recognized by the NAACP and endorsed by actress and celebrity vegan food influencer Tabitha Brown.

On the heels of Black History Month and National Women’s History month, Vicky Cakes® is making history of their own. They have secured 156 Jewel Osco grocery stores based in Chicago. The products are set to hit shelves in late Spring 2021, making Vicky Cakes® the first and only Black-owned pancake mix to be in a major retail chain.

Vicky Cakes® is not the run-of-the-mill add water only pancake mix. In fact, they are the ANTI just-add-water mix. Their products are vegan-friendly and come in 5 varieties: original, blueberry, pecan, chocolate chip, and gluten-free. But, they didn’t stop there. Vicky Cakes® recently launched original and caramel syrups that don’t contain preservatives and high fructose corn syrup, unlike Aunt Jemima, Hungry Jack and Mrs. Butterworth’s syrups.

This Black-owned pancake mix company is based in Dallas, Texas and is run by husband and wife duo Christian and Cortney Sargent. “We live in such a busy society”, says Christian Sargent, CEO and Co-Founder, “and with the global pandemic, now is the perfect time for families to sit down together for breakfast. Our mission is to bring 1,000,000 families back to the table for good meals and good memories.” And, Vicky Cakes® is no stranger to family.

Christian’s mom, Vicky, created this secret vegan recipe 40 years ago using the simple ingredients from her cabinets, all out of necessity to feed her children. After being inspired by ABC’s hit show Shark Tank, the Dallas couple launched the company in May of 2019 on Mother’s Day as an honorary gesture to Vicky for her dedication as a single mom. Vicky Cakes® is the trailblazer for the vegan pancake mix industry and is best known as The Heart of Breakfast™.

About Vicky Cakes
Vicky Cakes® Pancake & Waffle Mix is a consumer packaged goods manufacturer and distributor of pancake mix and syrups. Vicky Cakes® is dairy-free, made with wholesome ingredients, and is anti-just-add-water. The vegan product is based on a 40-year-old secret family recipe from the CEO’s mom, Vicky.

Guiding Vicky Cakes® is our vision to Be the Global Leader in Pancake & Waffle Mix by bringing families back to the table. “The Heart of Breakfast” is our mantra and it reflects our ambition to win in the marketplace and provide good food and good memories to families all across the world. Partners with Heart & Soul Outreach Ministries to serve food and provide toiletries for over 100 homeless attendees during an outdoor service on Nov. 29th

HOUSTON, TX (November 18, 2020) - Blessties USA and the HOODIES4HEALING foundation is partnering with Heart & Soul Outreach Ministries to host a fundraising service for the homeless on Sunday, November 29thfrom 9 am to 12 noon. Evangelists Wayne and Andrea Ormond will be delivering an inspirational sermon for this outside event that will be held right behind Minute Maid Park in the parking lot across from the Star of Hope in downtown. A blue tent and a cross will mark the exact spot of the event for anyone who wants to donate, volunteer or attend. Around 10:30, after the sermon, a hot thanksgiving meal will be served along with 100 backpacks filled with toiletries for the homeless.

Blessties USA is a Christian apparel & accessories boutique located in Cypress, TX. Open since 2015, Owner, RoseMary Tucker, has been spreading her love for Jesus Christ by designing spiritual t-shirts and hoodies. Each design she creates has a story of encouragement, love and positive thinking. You can find a wide range of fashion items in Tucker’s store from “WALK BY FAITH” or “I AM HEALED” tees to jumpsuits to a wide array of face masks and much more!

Tucker, founder of HOODIES4HEALING, a 501c3 organization that was spawned from her daughter, Dyanna, who developed a cyst in her brain that needed immediate surgery. Tucker raised over $60k by selling hoodies and afterwards “made a promise to God that after her daughter’s successful surgery, she would spend her time helping others in need continuously.” From the Hoodies4Healing foundation she has built a brand that continuously aims to help those in need and “pay it forward.”

Tucker will continue raising funds to help the homeless with her new HOODIES4HOMELESS initiative, selling hoodies through where a proceed of every hoodie sold will be used to serve the homeless.

Evangelists Wayne and Andrea Ormond, who married in 1995, have been ministering to the homeless since 2000. While they were both attending divinity school together, they learned how to witness to people, oftentimes in the streets during the night. When asked what motivated them to reach out to the homeless. The Ormonds simultaneously stated, “About 20 years ago, we started ministering to the homeless and going out every Sunday because a homeless guy wanted to pray to God in church and was not allowed in. God said to ‘Come as you are!’” They also stated that they are “Reaching the world one soul at a time, through Jesus Christ”

A kick-off fundraising event with the theme, “Blessties Being a Blessing,” will be held at Blessties on Saturday, November 21, 2020 from 8am- 12 pm where donations can be dropped off. Attendees are encouraged to bring canned goods, toiletries such as toilet paper, tissues, women’s personal hygiene items, socks and/or gift cards to buy these items. Coffee, donuts, bagels, juice and water will be provided. Free masks will also be provided.

Due to the all of the negativity and hardship that American has faced in 2020, especially the devastating effects of COVID-19, Tucker will continue promoting positivity through her hoodies and aims to “lift someone’s spirit” by doing so.

To schedule an interview with The Ormonds or RoseMary Tucker, please contact Michelle Stephenson, Publicist, at [email protected] 281-773-1672. To learn more about the HOODIES4HEALING foundationand view other media coverage, please go to

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MEDIA CONTACT: V. Michelle Stephenson VMS Communications [email protected] What Looks Like Black Explores Colorism in America (Houston, Texas, December 13, 2012)—CNN’s Starting Point anchor Soledad O’Brien recently examined the contentious skin secrets of the black community in her latest installment of the Black in America documentary series, “What Is Black in America?” Author K. Broussard takes this heated and never-ending debate several steps further in her book, What Looks Like Black, a compelling and thought-provoking novel that delves into the arcane and painful issues prompted by the African-American diaspora. Readers are immediately pulled into What Looks Like Black; a poignant tale that grapples with colorism dissected through the issues of skin shades and hair textures in the world of light skin vs. dark skin and all that this implies. K. Broussard overlaps a heartfelt third person voice that details the experiences of an expectant mother, with an intimate yet comical forthright first person voice of Ann speaking to her unborn child about her own painful journey and discovery of “what looks like black.” “The issue of colorism lies beneath the surface, often emerging at a very early age; it is an uncomfortable reality rooted within the black race. What Looks Like Black addresses the underlying assumptions of colorism, while presenting the stigmas people place on others along with the stigmas we place on ourselves based upon the skin we are in,” says K. Broussard. ABOUT THE BOOK Ann Girard is a black woman with blue eyes, straight hair, and fair skin who is born to black parents. Because of her questionable features, she has experienced a problematic existence. Her life has now become even more complicated with the news of her unexpected pregnancy. Filled with mixed emotions, due to her own anomalous looks, Ann contemplates raising a child in a world in which she has experienced so much grief. Throughout her life, she has suffered evil taunts and flubbed attempts to belong while constantly facing mystified stares and resentful glares, even as an adult. In an attempt to cope with her anxiety of what her child could experience, she channels her energy in a series of journal entries, about her past, written to her unborn child. As Ann records her daunting experiences of trying to belong, she undergoes a re-birth, thus redefining her philosophies of everything she ever knew. ABOUT THE AUTHOR K. Broussard has been a writer and journalist for over 15 years. She holds a bachelor's degree in mass media arts from Clark Atlanta University and a master's degree in creative writing from Columbia College. Her first children’s book, Maci’s Magic Hairbrush, is the first installment of a self-esteem youth series and is due out in 2013. Originally from Chicago’s South Side, she currently resides outside of Houston, Texas. She is married and the proud mother of one daughter and one son. What Looks Like Black is available at To book this author for speaking engagements or interviews, contact V. Michelle Stephenson, [email protected]

VMS Communications is now working with AMED Community Hospice on their Community Outreach efforts in the Houston area. Do you have a family member or friend who has been diagnosed with a terminally ill disease such as cancer, dementia, or is just at an age that requires some type of medical-related assistance in the home? If you feel that person can benefit from hospice services in the home, in a personal care home or nursing and rehab center, please contact me. Typically hospice services are recommended for someone who has been diagnosed with 6 months or less to live by a doctor (of course, only God really knows!). These services are FREE, fully covered by MEDICARE or MEDICAID. If this is the case, I can inform the family about the benefits of having "the hospital come to them" and to make sure their loved one is comfortable as they make their transition. This is something I am very passionate about as I wish I had known about these services when both of my parents died from cancer a few years ago. You can also contact me to provide information for your church or organization and/or to provide In-Service or CEUs for healthcare professionals. [email protected].
BREAST CANCER EVENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED--I have several upcoming events between now and the end of October such as the Tour de Pink, Hunt for Hope - Inflammatory Breast Cancer Pink Vision (We Support Breast Cancer), PINK PETALS FOR PAT- A BREAST CANCER AWARENESS INITIATIVE FOR THE UNINSURED AND THE UNDERINSURED and Reconstruction of a Survivor, a non-profit breast cancer organizationthat I will be either volunteering or hosting. Looking for others to help as well!
