BEWARE of the "funeral packages"! Negotiate from the General Price List, then ask for a significant percentage reduction in total price.

Shop around first. Do not allow a Funeral Director to pick up the Deceased until you get a General Price List (GPL). The Funeral Rule Requires Funeral Directors to give you a GPL when you ask for one in person. They must have one on their person when they come to your house to pick up remains. Go over the prices before you allow them to pick up the body. It could be a very costly mistake. They don’t let you off the hook once they have the remains. Don’t let hospice or nurses push you into a hasty mistake. They get kickbacks from certain funeral homes (You pay for it). A mistake can cost you thousands.

Most of us avoid planning their funerals and instead leave the decisions to their loved ones. But making arrangements immediately after a death can be unnecessarily expensive because it's such an emotional time. I often encourage families and friends to show love to their families and make those decisions for themselves.

1. Get duplicate death certificates.

2. Send thank-you notes.

3. Notify local Social Security office.

4. Handle Medicare.

5. Look into employment benefits.

6. Stop health insurance.

7. Notify life insurance companies.

8. Terminate other insurance policies.

9. Meet with a probate attorney.

10. Make a list of important bills (mortgage payments).

11. Contact financial advisers, stockbrokers, etc.

12. Notify mortgage companies and banks.

13. Close credit card accounts.

14. Notify credit reporting agencies.

15. Cancel driver's license.

16. Cancel email and website accounts.

17. Cancel memberships in organizations.

18. Contact a tax preparer.

19. Notify the election board.
