We covered all the spring plants that are currently out in the field - a little over 1500! Although it may not have been necessary, we wanted to ensure they were tucked in before the cold hits tomorrow. These plants are the first to bloom in early spring - sometimes as early as February! Their first blooms grace our flower subscriptions in March and April, and sometimes into May - which is when the zinnias and sunflowers take over. Gardener's hands. These are my hands. I'm so thankful for them. For the soil they turn, for the seeds they grow, for what they harvest. They may not be perfect or polished, but they are working hands. And I could not be prouder. Because I have learned how to grow and nurture living things, how to trust in God from seed to harvest, and how to bring together all the colors, all the components, all the pieces to bring you happiness in a simple bouquet.

This is how it all starts. This is close to 500 plants. All carefully chosen with the sole purpose of growing extraordinary bouquets that bring a smile to your face and joy to your heart. What do we have growing? Orlaya, snapdragons, strawflowers, and ammi to name a few! These flowers are the workhorses of early spring bouquets and often bloom from February to May. They are my favorites - you know why? Because I am harvesting and planting on cool or cold days, not dying in the Houston summer heat. So I love these flowers because they bloom when its so pleasant to be out in the field!

These are my second batch of seedlings. The first bunch was planted a few weeks ago. We'll do THREE plantings total for spring flowers. All in all, we'll have thousands of plants out in the field at any given time.

These cool season flowers have a special place in my heart and in spring subscription bouquets. Spring subscriptions include not only these beauties, above, but also the gorgeous ranunculus, anemones and ... I'm trying for tulips this year! Yes, yes I am. Fingers crossed!

I purchased this gorgeous amaryllis from the Bulb and Plant Sale held by the Garden Club of Houston. Look how beautiful! Its gorgeous and the color is the perfect red for Christmas, so velvety. Just this one bloom helps set the tone as we slow down, focus on advent and on the birth of Christ. It is just miraculous!

We are growing so many gorgeous snapdragons in 2023! We have varieties that like the cold (Feb/March), that like it cool (April/May) and that THRIVE in the heat (June - September). We hope to have snapdragons year round (barring a deep freeze in January or February). I have learned so much these past three years of growing flowers from seed. And every year we grow more and more. Thank you for following our journey! We are so thankful to be able to bring joy to our and neighbors!

I'm missing my flowers. Missing their scent all over my home. The textures, the colors, the variety. Spring will be here soon enough, so for now, lets dream of a field full of flowers, bees, butterflies and life!

(To carry me through the winter months, we have gorgeous, fragrant paperwhites all over the house. Their heady scent welcomes me when I open my front door. Better than any burning candle!)

Planning and planting for flower subscriptions begin months and months before the first bouquet is delivered. We start all our flowers from seeds and bulbs. Earnestly look for them to sprout. Lovingly plant them out in the filed. Baby them all through our winters. That is how we have locally grown flowers in February and March.

What seedlings do we have growing right now? Snapdragons, ranunculus, anemones, daffodils and so much more! By the end of November, we will have planted out over 3,500 of these lovely flowers. This means we'll have flowers as early as the last week of February! Locally grown flowers, responsibly grown for our friends in Houston? YOU BET!

Bulbs, bulbs and more bulbs! So excited this year to be growing paperwhites and daffodils!! Its my first time growing daffodils, but I have always loved their cheeriness as they announce that spring is coming. (We will have the paperwhites available as Christmas gifts! We will have singles, which are perfect for teacher gifts before the Christmas holiday and also larger arrangements, which are the perfect hostess gift or for yourself!) Well, the garden is resting for a week or two. Summer plants have been removed and composted. We've added a couple of inches of compost and manure to the fields. And in a few weeks we will be planting baby - these winter beauties grow all winter long and begin blooming as early as February in our area! How many of these winter beauties are we planting? Over 3,000!!!! (I order a ton of my seeds from The Gardener's Workshop and highly recommend them!

I can't believe summer is over and we are now looking forward to fall and cool nights! As a farmer, summer is all about being busy in the heat and fall is all about being busy in enjoyable weather. Fall is a time for planting (our spring flowers) and preparing for Christmas! This Christmas, we will be selling gorgeous and fragrant paperwhite bulbs, pre-sprouted and ready to gift or to enjoy in your own homes! Gorgeous specialty bouquet headed out the door this morning! (Can I say that, can I say that its gorgeous? I hope that it doesn't come across as proud ... but man! She is pretty enough to grace The Houstonian!!!) We are so thankful for our and friends who trust us with their special events!

Wow. Its been a busy, busy couple of months but here we are, with October knocking on our door. It seems I have caught every, single cold, sniffle or sneeze out there and man, I can't wait to be able to breathe again. But Florelle Fine Herbs and Flowers doesn't stop and this weekend we are cleaning out our summer flowers and prepping the field for our winter flowers. Currently, we have over 3000 baby plants growing in our garage. Everything from snapdragons to dill to strawflowers and a few new, fun additions that we have not grown. I'm excited to see how these new guys do and happy to welcome old favorites as well! Hope your weekend is going well and that you get to enjoy this glorious, beautiful weather.

Rolling the dice. This is as close as I get to gambling ... planting one last succession of zinnias in a race against our first frost date! Will they make it? Maaaaayyyybeeee ... planted out the first week of September, harvest in about 80 days ... mid November flowers. It's cutting it close, but we have not had our first frost until December the past two years so here goes nothing! (Should I have staryed them three weejs ago? Yes. Yes, i should have.)

Always looking for a new friend to add to the flower field next year. I'm considering Tube Roses. What do you think? The scent is insane and intoxicating and makes me think of heady nights in a tropical paradise! Now that I have a bit more space, I may add these beauties to the field. And, I may or may not keep them all to myself. Just kidding! I'll share!!!
