Hartwood Flora

Hartwood Flora Small boutique florist and grower in Hopkins, MN keeping things slow and local. As such, I grow many of the flowers I use or source from other local growers.

I believe that flowers can heal our souls and bring happiness at the first glance. My love of flowers began as a child in my mother's Iris bed and in the wildflowers I'd encounter playing in the woods. As soon as I had a home of my own I began gardening, each year changing and adding new things. I believe that I am responsible for doing my part to keep the Earth healthy by keeping things as sustai

nable as possible. I will fill in from wholesalers only as needed. In addition, I try to reuse vessels and hardware mechanics avoiding floral foam that is highly detrimental to our environment. I am forever inspired by our natural world and will often include wild elements in my designs. I aim to share with you what I feel in nature and flowers through my designs and photos.

Quick tour of the cutting garden before the heat of the day blows out these tulips. I’ve been busy making edits, dividing and planting out baby seedlings. Before I know it, this garden will be plum full of so much goodness!!

New planting design in the works, tomorrow we start it. This couple is wanting a large naturalistic corner bed to anchor their front yard filled with grasses and pollinator/bird friendly plants. And while we’re at it, they also need to be deer and rabbit resistant.

The existing yard was unfortunately let go for many years by the previous owners so they have been battling many invasives- buckthorn, Canadian thistle, garlic mustard and more as well as ages old grapevines and woody shrubs left to multiply. They have made great strides already to clear out as much as possible. We have also found a few gems as well; lots of bearded iris and big clumps of peonies; looking forward to seeing what colors they will be.

The crabapple buds are fattening; so are the lilacs. Tulips are starting to bloom; so are the euphorbias. Spring is finally here and it won’t be long before the cutting garden is full to the brim with bloom!!
Spring is my favorite 💚🌱

Let us all remember that the Earth does not belong to us. We are lucky enough to have been given Earth as a home and it is up to us all to care for her. What we do to her, we do to humanity. And so, while a day dedicated to her is nice; truly, every day is EARTH DAY.

The first round of seedlings started on March 17th are looking good and ready for the next phase. When sowing seeds, I always put more than one seed in a cell to give myself the best chance of getting the quantity I’m looking for. I also sow a few more cells than I actually need for insurance as sometimes along the way, I may lose some. Now most of these are germinated and grown up enough to settle on one per cell to give maximum room for growth. And, any empty cells can be patched in with healthy extras.

I love seed starting! The magic of watching, in some cases, a tiny little spec put in some soil and given water sprout and rapidly become a tiny little plant. Nature knows just what it’s doing!! 🌱

I’m away in North Carolina for a few days and found a wonderful garden center to walk through. It was so fun see so many different plants that I can’t grow in my Zone 4/5 garden in Minnesota. But here are 3 that we can and I love how it shows the importance of color and texture when planning your landscaping. In the winter, this color will persist and help to bring brightness to our cold grey days and then as we roll into summer they harmonize wonderfully with the greens they’ll be surrounded by. With Cornus ‘midwinter fire’ & Arborvitae yellow ribbon’ you will get the consistent orange-red branches and the evergreen yellow. Then adding a Viburnum with fantastic branching structure for some body followed by beautiful May blooms you’ve got a winning combination.

A few of my jealous “wish I could plants”: Camelias, Mahonia, Loropetelum (especially ‘Crimson Fire’ with its dark leaves and cerise colored fringe flowers) and top of the list if I had the right climate and space, because this beauty likes to get big, Lady Banks Rose.

Tomorrow we roll into March and Spring is right around the corner. I CANNOT WAIT!!

Soon!! Repeat after me…soon.

Hello my friends, are you there? I’ve been away for a while. I’ve still been gardening, growing and designing for myself and loved ones. I’ve been honing my skills where I can, constantly learning and sharing more over on my personal account . But I’m excited to be back with a renewed focus and energy. More on what’s to come ahead!
In the meantime, wishing you all a perfectly wonderful Valentine’s Day in whatever way that looks for you 💝.
