The storm is raging. The winds are crazy. The power’s turning on and off. And this is the first line of my morning devotional:

“As God’s child, live today with the surety, hope, and courage that come from knowing that your standing before God is secure.” -Paul David Tripp

Nothing about a storm (whether a physical storm, or a storm of life) is certain. It can feel like there’s nothing to stand on that’s stable.

BUT OUR STANDING BEFORE GOD IS SECURE.

Why? Because baby Jesus was sent to die on a cross to take away our sins so we can stand before our holy God, clean and covered by His righteousness.

Christmas is almost here. As it gets closer, may our anticipation build because we get to celebrate the greatest gift ever given - as God’s child, we have the daily assurance that He is always with us and no storm can shake us from Him. Praise. The. Lord.

A story is told of a king who went into his garden one morning, and found everything withered and dying. He asked the oak that stood near the gate what the trouble was. He found it was sick of life and determined to die because it was not tall and beautiful like the pine. The pine was all out of heart because it could not bear grapes, like the vine. The vine was going to throw its life away because it could not stand erect and have as fine fruit as the peach tree. The geranium was fretting because it was not tall and fragrant like the lilac.
And so on all through the garden. Coming to a heart’s-ease, he found its bright face lifted as cheery as ever. “Well, heart’s-ease, I’m glad, amidst all this discouragement, to find one brave little flower. You do not seem to be the least disheartened.” “No, I am not of much account, but I thought that if you wanted an oak, or a pine, or a peach tree, or a lilac, you would have planted one; but as I knew you wanted a heart’s-ease, I am determined to be the best little heart’s-ease that I can.”

It’s a perfect fall day, and I went to go do a perfect fall day thing.. but got rained out.

So I’ll pick elderberries another day - today is for cozy blankets, tea, and reality hitting that summer really is over.

Here’s a few highlights: Yellowstone, country fair, fresh picked strawberries, blueberries, and huckleberries, spontaneous ukulele lessons, new car ❤️

Change of seasons becomes more beautiful each year as I learn to lean into the rhythms and patterns nature displays. I still don’t love snow.. but I’m actually looking forward to the slow pace of cozy winter days..

Right now, fall means harvesting, preparing, delighting. Thank you Jesus for providing good nourishment from your land - and your word. May we be faithful to store up, enjoy, and share each good thing you give us in this new season.

The rain didn’t give us ideal shopping weather.. but it did make for some magical photos! All two of them.

Under the pouring rain, we managed to get in one glass of gluhwein/kinderpunsch, shop a few booths, and make it to the castle before giving up and getting Korean food 😂 because that’s what you go to Germany to eat, right?!

Wishing I was back there for New Years to experience their epic fireworks - from what I hear, Germans ring in the new year right. Have a (and do it the German way!) ❤️🎉🤩

One of my favorite things to learn of the European Christmas markets was that they are pretty much always in the center of town - where the cathedral is.

The cathedrals were built first, and then the town was built around it. The towns CENTER around worship, even if the people’s hearts don’t.

This quote from Streams in the Desert is one I collected at some point this year while focusing on PEACE (my word of the year), and reading the line about “the deepest center of the soul” will now bring to mind those cathedrals in the center of the towns..

Be still, and know that I am God (Ps. 46:10).
Is there any note of music in all the chorus as mighty as the emphatic pause? Is there any word in all the Psalter more eloquent than that one word, Selah (Pause)? Is there anything more thrilling and awful than the hush that comes before the bursting of the tempest and the strange quiet that seems to fall upon all nature before some preternatural phenomenon or convulsion? Is there anything that can touch our hearts as the power of stillness?
There is for the heart that will cease from itself, “the peace of God that passeth all understanding,” a “quietness and confidence” which is the source of all strength, a sweet peace “which nothing can offend,” a deep rest which the world can neither give nor take away. There is in the deepest center of the soul a chamber of peace where God dwells, and where, if we will only enter in and hush every other sound, we can hear His still, small voice.
There is in the swiftest wheel that revolves upon its axis a place in the very center, where there is no movement at all; and so in the busiest life there may be a place where we dwell alone with God, in eternal stillness.

Christmas market in Rothenburg - this is where I met the German snowball. All those balls in the shop windows are snowballs (aka fried pie dough drizzled or rolled in flavored toppings or chocolate.

Ever since then, I’ve been researching and plotting out how I will make them on Christmas Eve..

Turns out, the special tool they’ve created to fry them in is kind of a big deal. Swipe to the last pic to see my version - one did stay together all the way to the end! I’ll call that a success..and I’ll leave the snowball making to the experts 😂

Next Monday I’ll be heading to Germany! My grandma has been bragging about the amazing Christmas markets for years, so I’m going to see what all the fuss is about, and maybe out-shop her.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
PSA - in case you need to get your passport soon, they don’t tell you that your photo has to have a white background (or did they and I just completely missed it?).

I went through all the pain of taking this selfie, printing it on photo paper, resizing and reprinting several times, cutting so it would be JUUUSST the right size for the little box, only to be told at the counter that it needed to have a white background.. 🤦‍♀️

Oh well - I’ve got my passport, and all I have left is the packing! That’s the easy part.

Let me tell you, if you’re traveling for the holidays or your honeymoon coming up: a capsule wardrobe is a MUST. My winter wardrobe is already front and center in my closet and everything goes with everything, so all I need is to follow the formula:

The first photo is what I thought PEACE looked like. A wedding in my hometown of Bass Lake represents:
Rest.
Home.
Familiarity.
Everything I expect PEACE to be.

She has brought me daily chaos. She broke my laptop. She’s ruined almost every pair of pants I own. She makes everything 10x harder.

But this year, as I’m focusing and reflecting on PEACE, God has graciously reminded me that actual peace is found in Him and not in our circumstances.

Rosie has been my opportunity to choose peace in the midst of chaos.. She is my daily reminder that it doesn’t matter what (or who) is swirling around you - PEACE is always available from Him Who IS peace.

I’m already starting to think about next year’s “word of the year.” This year has been PEACE, but there’s still a month and a half left when that should continue to be my focus - not a new word..
