His name was Catalino Curet Alonso. Everybody called him Tite.He wrote "Anacaona." He wrote "Las Caras Lindas." He wrote "Periódico de Ayer." He wrote "Plantación Adentro." He wrote "Pueblo Latino." He wrote "Babaila." He wrote "Tiemblas." He wrote songs for Cheo Feliciano, Héctor Lavoe, Ismael Rivera, La Lupe, Rubén Blades, Celia Cruz, Roberto Roena, Pete "El Conde" Rodríguez, Cheo's brother in voice and Cheo's brother in spirit. Two thousand songs. More than two thousand, by some counts.He worked at the post office.Every morning in Santurce, Tite Curet Alonso put on the navy-blue uniform of the United States Postal Service and walked his route. He delivered mail to the same neighborhoods he had grown up in. He carried a satchel. He knew the dogs. He knew the abuelas who watched him from their windows. He scribbled lyrics on scraps of paper between addresses. He went home in the evening and recorded demos at the kitchen table.He never quit the day job. Not after "Las Caras Lindas" became one of the most important songs in the Black Boricua songbook. Not after "Periódico de Ayer" became Lavoe's. Not after his songs were carrying the entire Fania catalog on their backs. He retired from the post office in 1995. From the postal service. Not from songwriting.You know why he didn't quit? Because the music industry didn't pay him what those songs were worth. Because publishing was a racket and he saw what happened to writers who depended on it. Because the route was steady. Because he had a family. Because he was a working man, and working men work.He wrote two thousand songs that built the soundtrack of a generation, and the world that danced to them never bothered to learn his name.We know it now.Catalino "Tite" Curet Alonso.
