‘A’ali’i has been a plant that eluded me for years. When I was going through ‘uniki to become an ʻōlapa (hula dancer), my Kumu said that I should make ‘a’ali’i lei because not only is it beautiful, but it is resilient.

My resilience was truly tested during that time - personally, professionally and in my hula journey. If you have ever experienced ‘uniki, it is the ultimate test in resilience.

This weekend, I was fortunate to be able to take home the florals from a client project which included ‘a’ali’i. You bet I made lei out of all of it ☺️. Here’s to ongoing resilience and beauty as we kick off a new week 🫶🏼!

The business that helped me heal from tech burnout is again intersecting with my tech life on-island. I was asked to create the florals for the Emerging Technology and Storytelling Summit today as part of the Honolulu Tech Week events, but also attended the event as a participant. This week’s events also allowed me to gain more visibility for my software consulting business, Haumea Technologies. Once again, my different worlds collide, but I realize that this time, they are colliding with purpose. Mahalo again for allowing me to share my craft with you 🫶🏼

In 2013, I started Haumea Designs to help me heal from the burnout of working in the tech industry for decades. It allowed me to create beauty, share my love of flowers and truly be present in a community that appreciated the effort and the love that went into each and every lei, every bouquet, every arrangement I created. These are some of my signature lei that launched my small business into spaces and places that I could not have imagined. I continue to be amazed with the communities that allow me to practice and share my craft.

After much-needed rest, I have returned to my love of flowers.

Most do not know this, but during my time in the Bay Area, I used to create floral arrangements for Restaurant Gary Danko, a high-end restaurant in San Francisco. Similar to this arrangement, but 5-10 times larger. This was my first exposure to the day in the life of a florist and a trial career change from my day job, working as a software developer and architect. I still love working with flowers, but this will continue to be my side hustle. When I decide to retire, this will be my retirement job ☺️.

Aloha,

As most of you know, I have been MIA for quite some time. Over the last 12 years, I have created lei to celebrate your special occasions - graduations, engagements, weddings, birthdays, photoshoots and everything else in between. This year, I paused to celebrate one of my own.

This year, I intentionally turned away orders in order to focus and celebrate my daughter’s week of graduations, graduation celebrations and family gatherings. She has been on quite a journey graduating from high school during the start of the pandemic, entering college during the height of the pandemic and ultimately graduating from her dream school, UC Berkeley! Go Bears! 🐻

So proud of my daughter’s tenacity, resilience, grit and grace during this time to make her dreams come true, inspired by her continued strive for excellence to reach her goals and make the world a better place and excited to see what’s next! Here’s to the Class of 2025 🎉🎓
