Family photos don't have to eat your cocktail hour.

How we get them done in about 20 minutes:

1. Keep it to around 10 groupings (couple, parents, grandparents, siblings and their families)
2. Write the list with full names
3. Tell each person ahead of time to stay at the ceremony site
4. Have a helper who knows the family call the next group
5. If you're doing a first look, knock some out before the ceremony

What does "organized" actually look like on a wedding day?

It looks like knowing where everyone needs to be before they need to be there. A family photo list with full names, so no one is guessing which "mom" I'm calling out. A quiet check-in when the timeline runs long, and a plan B already in my pocket.

Most of it you'll never see. You'll just notice the day felt easy and you got to enjoy it.

The single biggest factor in how your photos look is your ceremony start time.

My rule of thumb: start the ceremony 2 to 2.5 hours before sunset. That leaves room for family photos and golden hour portraits.

One thing most couples don't know: in Napa, hills and trees can put your venue in shade an hour before the official sunset time. I check the exact sun path for your venue and date before we finalize the timeline.

80 guests. A ceremony under a centuries-old oak. Views across the valley that kept pulling everyone to the edge of the lawn during cocktail hour.

Lyndsey and Jeet kept their wedding small on purpose so they could spend real time with their people. Dinner was set with cream linens, gold chargers, and olive branches, and the golden hour light that evening was some of the best I've seen.

We're in the middle of it right now: late summer through fall is the most popular stretch for Napa weddings.

A few things to know before you pick a date:

- August through October brings golden vineyards and great light, and also Crush season and higher hotel prices
- Spring is lush and green, with a small chance of rain
- November through March means better venue availability and lower costs
- Summer can hit the 90s, so ceremony time matters

My own wedding photographer didn't show up. 😳

And somehow, that is one of the reasons I care so much about how I photograph your wedding. My wedding day got rushed. I lost my bouquet somewhere in the chaos. And I have almost no professional photos from it.

Which is kind of wild, considering how much I freaking love wedding photography.

I don't want that for you.

I want you to have someone who knows what comes next. Someone keeping an eye on the timeline. Someone who can get through family photos in 20 minutes instead of an hour.

Someone steady in the room so you get to actually be in the room, too.

Because your wedding isn't a photoshoot with a party happening around it. You invited these people because you want to be with them.

That's what I'm protecting.

And yes, I also want to give you photos that make you look back and go, "OH MY GOD. I LOVE THIS!"
