The original Party 93.1 WPYM went on the air, December 31, 2001 playing a mixture of new dance music EDM/Trance etc mixed with classic Miami freestyle and house giving the station a unique lo
cal sound. ( the format flip can be heard here: http://formatchange.com/wtmi-becomes-party-93-1/ ) There was nothing else like it at the time on South Florida radio when most other Miami based contemporary stations were either playing variations of rap/ hip hop/ rhythmic or Pop music. WPYM was revolutionary at the time, there were no other full power FM dance stations on the air in the USA. WPYM won several awards for its format during its time on the air from Dec 31, 2001 through Feb, 14 2005. The reasons for the format change on Cox radio's Party 93.1 were due to Clear Channels 94.9 Zeta 4 Rock station flipping to spanish/ reageaton... WPYM was doing well with local advertisers but Cox radio headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia were not satisfied, they were looking for and demanded national big budget advertisers to buy spots on 93.1 and that was not happening, WPYM's advertisers were mostly local... The CEO's at Cox radio ordered Party 93.1 to flip to rock on the weekend of February 12, 2005 and by Monday February 14, 2005 they became 93-Rock WHDR since there was no other contemporary rock station in Miami. ( they did so in the hopes of capitalizing on big budget advertisers buying more spots on the rock format )...
Many speculate that Clear Channel, owners of 94.9 Zeta rock, knew of Cox radios situation with advertisers on Party 93.1... and made a strategic move by cancelling the rock format on 94.9 in hopes that Party 93.1 would flip ( and they did ) in doing that would eliminate Dance Party 93.1 and also its competition with their bread and butter Pop/ Top 40 CHR Y-100 which at the time did not play any dance. Clear Channel succeeded in their attempts to get Party 931 off the air and by Feb, 14 2005 there was no more dance music in Miami... 93.1 remained as an internet only dance station for less than a year due to public out cry and demand on ( www.party931.com ) but the enormous costs of maintaining the webstream with thousands of listeners and hits world wide lead Cox radio Miami to shut down the stream and by the end of 2005 Party 93.1 was gone for good. But not for long...
In 2008 surprisingly Cox radio Miami resurrected Party 93.1 as an HD radio station ( www.hdradio.com ) on 93.1-2 but on this iteration they are not playing any freestyle, the play list is more broadened. Party931.com also came back online in 2008 but was mysteriously taken back offline in 2013.... as of this writing Party 93.1 can only be heard on South Florida digital radio. There is no word if the web-stream will return...
