“The tiny movements of the Smurfs running underneath giant stomping footsteps of the humans dancing in a nightclub was a highlight, and the sound of monstrous, huge mopeds whizzing by the Smurfs as they weaved their way through the streets of Paris was also fantastic. Mike Minkler and Duncan McRae masterfully handled the mixing side of things, taking our material to another level and crafting a wonderful mix that worked so well with Henry Jackman’s brilliant score. I’m so pleased with how the sound track turned out in the final film.”

Smurfs, says Whittaker, marks a career highlight and he appreciates the support from Paramount provided.

“Our producer, Ryan Harris, and our post exec Paul Cihocki worked tirelessly with me to help bring Chris’ vision to the screen — and I think we did it!”

| “A house in the Hollywood Hills with an expansive view of the city served as the perfect venue to discuss the craft behind “The Studio,” on Apple TV+, which recently received 23 Emmy nominations (a record for a freshman comedy.)

Veteran re-recording mixer John Ross, who worked on projects spanning “Silver Linings Playbook” to “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” served as both the event’s host and moderator for a panel that featured “The Studio” composer Antonio Sanchez, music editor Lorena Perez Batista, picture editor Eric Kissack, supervising sound editor George Haddad, and re-recording mixers Lindsey Alvarez and Fred Howard.”

Variety | ‘The Pitt,’ ‘Andor’ and ‘The Studio’ Sound Teams on Creating Chaotic Emergency Room Environments, Fist Fights and More

In order to create the sounds of the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital in HBO’s “The Pitt,” supervising sound editor Bryan Parker had to do a medical crash course into the sounds of an over-crowded emergency room. “When we’re working on creating medical sounds, we’re not going for anything flashy. We’re trying to make fans watching feel as if they’re there next to Dana and feeling the stress of trying to manage two different patients that both need Robby at the same time in the different trauma rooms. We tried to make it feel really human and authentic.”

Getting inside of a main character’s shoes can be a difficult task sonically, but in creating the world of Los Angeles in Apple TV’s “The Studio,” supervising sound editor George Haddad wanted fans to feel the anxiety and stress newly appointed Continental Studios head Matt Remick (Seth Rogen) experiences. As the show utilizes long one-take shots to show the behind-the-scenes of what it’s like to work on location in a legacy film studio, Haddad explains that the sound in “The Oner” had to create a claustrophobic atmosphere to showcase the filmmaking experience on set.

For the Golden Globes episode of The Studio, Rogen and Goldberg wanted to capture every element of the experience of being at the Beverly Hilton, down to the sound of the ballroom. For the sound editing and sound mixing team — including George Haddad, Fred Howard, Lorena Perez Batista, and Buck Robinson — that presented its own set of complications. “It was a monumental task — I mean, there was just hundreds, if not over a thousand extras to worry about with sound, whether we were doing Foley or the background voices,” says supervising sound editor Haddad. “It's perfect for nerds like us. It's like such a gift to get that episode.”
