If you’ve lived in Salt Lake County for any amount of time, you’ve probably seen one of these giant wooden “circus tent” pavilions rising out of a park hillside.

Built in 1978 and designed by architect L. Keith Sorensen, these Mid-Century Modern pavilions were created for Salt Lake County Parks & Rec as bold public gathering spaces — open, airy, sculptural, and impossible to ignore. Holladay’s sits at Creekside, and its 16 massive curved wooden beams each weigh about 5,000 pounds.

Stand underneath it and look up through the center opening. It feels a little impossible. A little futuristic.

Fifty years later, it still makes people stop and ask: what is that thing?

A house might start to feel like a living thing once you learn its story.

At the Harold W. and Evelyn Burton House, a chance visit from a former nanny unlocked decades of hidden stories — from attic bedrooms to horseback rides across what used to be open fields.

What started as a simple restoration turned into a full search for every family, every memory, every layer of history still living in the house.

And this is just one stop on the tour.

Check out Holladay's Historic Tour for yourself. More stories are waiting.

POV: You build your own house with your own hands. 💪🏼

Fenno and Amy Casto spent 22 years building their home one bag of cement at a time. Walls came down while they were still living inside. It rained. It snowed (right on top of their beds)! Amy cooked under an umbrella. And they still hosted parties.

The kids remember it as an adventure. They didn't know life any other way.

This might be one of the most fascinating historic home stories we've heard!

Celebrate Preservation Month with us and read this (and more!) on Holladay's Historic Tour.

May is Preservation Month, which is a great excuse to pay attention to the stories places we pass every day.

Old homes, vintage signs, original details and familiar streets all tell the tale of how Holladay became Holladay.

Take a walk (or drive), and keep your eyes peeled for green signs! Scan the QR codes to read the stories!

PLACE MEMORIES - Do you have a particular memory that is associated with one of the places in Holladay?

One of the members of the Holladay Historical Commission, Dr. Martha Bradly Evans, shares this memory:

"When I was in third grade, I used to ride my bike from Indian Rock Road to the South along Holladay Boulevard to G. Carlos Smith’s store to put my hard-earned allowance money on “lay away” for a game called “Seek” that I thought I had to have. It took weeks and weeks but he was so kind to take my quarters until I had paid in full. Every time I drive by that corner, I remember my eight-year-old self determinedly riding along the dirt shoulder to the road to make good on my debt. He was so kind, encouraging me along the way and helping me buy a game I was sure was crucial to my personal salvation. "

Share your memories in the comments! Bonus points if you have a photo!
