I went to flower farm last week for lisianthus and immediately got distracted by the dahlia hoop house. Like Pepe Le Pew, nose in the air, I was completely drawn in. 🌸✨ Dahlias have always been a favorite of mine to design with—and since they’re not always in season, I couldn’t resist I had to take little work break to harvest some for myself!

For starters they breathe through their flowers. Unlike many plants that primarily exchange gases through their leaves, anthuriums have specialized structures in their spathes (that flashy, colorful “flower” part) that allow them to photosynthesize and respire. It’s part of what helps them thrive in the low-light understories of tropical forests.

Also cool? Their name comes from the Greek words “anthos” (flower) and “oura” (tail), so they’re literally called “flowering tail”—a nod to that funky spadix sticking out of the center. Total drama queens of the plant world !!

Do you have them where you live? I had never seen them in the wild until I was in Aruba. 🍋 Mimosa flowers are just something else — that soft, yellow fluff is such a vibe. They’re not always easy to find, which makes them even more special. No wonder florists love them!
