Lisianthus is one of my favorite flowers. Growing it is truly a labor of love. Many flower farmers start lisianthus plants from plugs in early spring, and I am no exception. However, every year I like to challenge myself and grow a crop that I start from seed. The white frilly variety has just a hint of blush and is called "First Love". It is this year's grown-from-seed crop. I started these seeds in January! Now August, I am finally starting to harvest them along with the other varieties I grow. The pink/apricot flowers pictured are Corelli Apricot, another beautiful variety. Next season I will be starting "Terracotta' from seed.

When you're a flower farmer florist, you are always planting seeds, even in the winter. Soil blocking is an awesome sowing technique that allows you to grow hundreds of seedlings in a very small space, all while avoiding the use of plastics. Seedling roots are naturally air-pruned as well, so you can avoid producing root-bound plants. Here I have planted 160 seeds onto a single cafeteria tray. Soil blocks with seedlings are planted directly outside at the appropriate time after hardening off.

Finally feeling like fall in NE Ohio. What a busy summer it was! My son got married and both my boys moved back from Tennessee. We did wedding flowers and lots of growing. Already planted my cool season annuals for next spring- hundreds of snapdragons. Time to start thinking about the holidays.....table centerpieces for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Loving the color palette this time of year.

Anyone have the winter blues? I know I do! Can't wait till spring...filling the days with planning this year's cutting garden and ordering too many seeds. 😊 Made a dozen of these winter-themed centerpieces for an event last weekend. Hope the attendees that got to take them home enjoyed them!
