Do you remember our very first calf ever born here at Buck Ridge? Meet Bella! 🥰

Bella was our first little Buck Ridge baby, and it’s hard to believe she will be 3 years old the week of Thanksgiving this year!

Watching her grow from a tiny calf into the beautiful Highland cow she is today has been such a special part of our farm journey. She will always hold a special place in our hearts because she represents the beginning of our Highland herd and so many memories made here at Buck Ridge.

From one little calf to the herd we have today, it’s amazing to look back and see how far we’ve come. 🐮✨

🐮 Highland Fun Fact! 🐮

Did you know that both male and female Highland cattle grow horns?

Their horns aren’t just for looks! Highland cows use them to brush snow away in the winter so they can reach grass underneath. They also help regulate body temperature by allowing heat to escape through the blood vessels in the horns during warmer weather.

Every set of horns is unique—some grow long and gracefully outward, while others curve upward or forward, giving each Highland its own personality and look.

Changing out a herd bull every few years is one of the best ways to keep a healthy, productive cattle herd. Here are the main reasons:

* Prevents inbreeding. As your heifers grow up, they can eventually become related to your bull. Replacing him helps avoid breeding daughters and granddaughters, which can lead to health and fertility issues.
* Introduces new genetics. A new bull can improve traits like growth, calving ease, temperament, muscle, milk production, or even coat color, depending on your breeding goals.
* Improves herd quality. Each new bull is an opportunity to make the next generation better than the last.
* Maintains fertility. Even healthy bulls can become less fertile as they age or if injuries occur. Bringing in a younger bull helps keep conception rates high.
* Keeps your breeding program moving forward. Selecting a bull with strong genetics allows you to continually improve your herd year after year.

For your Highland cattle at Buck Ridge, rotating in a new bull every 3–5 years is a common practice, especially as more heifers are born and retained in the herd. It helps ensure healthy calves while continually strengthening the genetics of your herd.

We are sad to say but Creeks time is coming to an end at Buck Ridge as we search for our new bull for this fall/winter.

It’s amazing what a little vision, a lot of hard work, and plenty of determination can accomplish.

When we first started at Buck Ridge Barns, this property looked very different. Over the years, we’ve poured our hearts into transforming it into the venue and working farm it is today.

Every flower planted, every fence built, every animal added to the farm, and every wedding celebrated has become part of the Buck Ridge story. Looking back reminds us just how far we’ve come—and we’re so grateful to everyone who has supported us along the way.

Meet one of our newest Highland calves! This is Gilligan, or Gilly for short. 🤍🐮

Gilly is a white Highland bull with a sweet personality. He absolutely loves being brushed, and Ella and I have been working with him on halter training.

Once he’s older, Gilly will become one of Buck Ridge’s beer calves for weddings and special events.
