This has to be one of the coolest things the county has done to support the local economy. We have a marketplace to shop from. I need to put more stuff on it now!

Loudoun County’s farm-to-consumer experience is going digital with the launch of the Loudoun Made Loudoun Grown Marketplace, an e-commerce platform that offers a one-stop-shop for consumers to support local farms. This is the perfect tool at the perfect time, safely connecting customers and farm b...

Latest recipe for a softer sandwich style sourdough bread. In wheat and white. Putting a loaf of each in the market today. It’s homemade bread made right here on the farm with local milk, butter, and eggs. The wheat is made with our own local @hangingrockhayandgrain milled Historic Colvin Mill @friendsofcolvinrunmill. I know, I should get back to baguettes, but these loaves will stay tender for days, a nice fresh crispy baguette is only good for the weekend with some local cheese while you are winery hopping. Unless of course, you get some eggs and maple syrup to make some pain perdu later. #sourdough #homemade #buyfreshbuylocal #loudouncounty #takeloudounhome

This is a time I find beautiful; young verdant leaves glowing, a cool Spring rain paints dark contours under the tenuous light of a new day better than any Gauguin, light grey plumes slowly lift over the Ridge like smoke from a campfire. I had to pause and absorb. This farm may be old, and still in need of repair, but it never relinquished its beauty or potential. New life pours in every day, and same day, I hope it all adds up. Alright... enough pausing, the chickens are yelling at me...

I’ve been activating my starter to make some breads, testing new ideas. I have some to Andrea @Full Blaze Farm and Apiary to use. She already did a wonderful job at making her first loaf, some challah. Looks amazing. Today, I started working out a recipe for chocolate chip muffins. Yeah... it sort of turns into more of a conversation about, “what do I want for breakfast?” Normally I out streusel on top. But oh well...

Picked up nucs and spoke with my mentor. I didn’t expect all the bee work today, but I got it all done. I installed two new colonies, House Stark and House Tyrell. Strengthened the weak colony, House Dayne by pulling a few frames from my strange hive (more on strange later), and queen cells from House Lannister.

The Lannister’s were ready to swarm, requeen, or both, there were tons of capped queen cells. So, I decided to give an option for House Dayne to requeen by adding a few of the queen cells from the Lannister’s, as well as a few additional brood.

House Greyjoy was booming, and so I decided to take another round of young queens from the Lannister’s and put them in a nuc I did not expect to create. With only the frame of brood and queens, I decided to fill the rest of the nuc with brood, bees and honey from Greyjoy.

I now have 6 hives and a nucleus hive (half of a hive).

Since this is only my second year, I thought the same as always, I need to strengthen the hives, but I learned today, and I didn’t even think about it, but these hives are already well established, unlike last year when I first started them out. Since the hives are ready, my mentor suggested I put two supers on each. Last year was only one super, and I felt lucky to get honey for a first year.

The new nucs are super strong. I feel stronger than last year. The trees are ready to pop. I am hoping for another very successful year. They all seemed much happier now that they have room.

Locally grown and homemade products at Homestead 1870 | Farm Market

When you took two days off to be outside, but it's too windy and cold so you build an integrated online store instead....

Not quite done... but there's a way to do 2 things. 1, you can check the stock of things like EGGS... so you know if there's eggs in the store, but you can also check the stock of everything else. 2, you can now place orders for items that are not in stock and hopefully get notified when they are in stock.

Locally grown and homemade products available from Homestead 1870 farm market. Features products grown, raised and produced right on the farm.

Friday afternoon I spent some time with my mentee at Full Blaze Farm and Apiary installing two packages of bees. I prefer to install nucs, much easier! In any case, we had a great time getting her first two colonies installed.

Social Distance

Hey! Working from home again today. I took this this morning, but had to wait to lunch to share. I got some fresh eggs out in the market. If you need some fresh air, come out and see the chickens. I know... I need benches, right? Coming soon! Also contemplating a chicken feeder thing.... or something.

I decided I need a real breakfast this morning. I had left over pumpkin from the pumpkin cheesecake. So, I made some from scratch pumpkin pie pancakes. I made a cinnamon, sugar and brown sugar sprinkle. The local Vale of the Blue Ridge maple syrup is thick and has that perfect burn like a single malt scotch. It’s the smoky flavor, like caramel that really sets off a perfect pancake.

This season I found so many wonderful local shops that carried fantastic things that you will not find in a large chain. From clothing, to coffee pots, arts, crafts and food, you will find something unique, beautiful and extraordinary. I swear it’s much easier to walk around one of our wonderful local towns, enter in any shop and you will easily find something to treasure. Round hill, Purcellville, Middleburg, Harpers Ferry, Shepherdstown are beautiful right now! Enjoy a nice historic town, a much easier and enjoyable pace. Absorb everything this season has to offer, and the best shopping experience by far.

There are so many great places in Loudoun. We have access to some of the best. So, here’s reminder to #buyfreshbuylocal and to #takeloudounhome this season. Fresh local cream and milk, butter, Maple syrup, and eggs.

Yesterday, my daughter and my two Granddaughters were so happy to stop by your wonderful farm! The little ones were most interested in the two barn cats as they were so friendly! We will be back, hopefully to stay at your B&B in the near future! Thanks for being our oasis in these strange days!
Thank you so much for being such a little haven of joy! I took my 2 little girls for a ride out to the country to get them out of the house. We stopped to explore your little shop and were absolutely delighted to find your chickens, cows, horses and especially your kitties! We have not had so much fun in, well, 6 weeks. We also purchased some yummy cheeses and chocolate milk. What a special little place. We can’t wait to come back!
The BEST cream soda I have ever had in my life, thanks Chris!
