For over 25 years I have tried to explain to clients and electrical inspectors why you should never put a grounding rod on a generator without resistors in line.
First no code exist that supports grounding a mobile trailer mounted generator and OSHA code forbids it.

Now if your Inspector tells you to ground the unit he should be referred to Article 250 section 34.
50.34 Generators-Portable and Vehicle-Mounted
(A) Portable Generators. The frame of a portable generator is not be required to be grounded to the earth if:
(1) The generator only supplies equipment or cord-and-plug-connected equipment through receptacles mounted on the generator, or both, and
(2) The metal parts of generator and the grounding terminals of the receptacles are bonded to the generator frame.

Now I do find it necessary and in compliance to bond your stage back to the generator frame. This keeps any potential voltage grounded to the generator windings.

In the last few years a few towns have seen the danger of ground rods as a conductive channel for lightning.

Please remember it is your liability at stake, if you are required to instal a grounding rod have the inspector show you the NEC code that supports his insistence and then have him sign off on the liability.
