Abraham Lincoln Lewis was born the son of a South Carolina blacksmith on March 29, 1865 in Florida. In 1901 he became a founder of Florida’s first life insurance company-the Afro-American Life Insurance Company. Eight years later, he became the secretary and manager of the Memorial Cemetary Association and worked his way to the presidency of this organization. He also became the president of the Afro-American Life Insurance Company and the business expanded to other states under his leadership. He then founded the National Negro Insurance Association in 1921. In 1935, he purchased oceanfront property on Amelia Island, FL and established “American Beach” which many Gullah/Geechee people flocked to with their families during segregation and which is still in operation to this day. American Beach in its heyday included numerous Black owned hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs. As a result of his visionary work, A L Lewis became Florida’s first Black millionaire.
