Hurricane Relief Drive Update: Tuesday, October 8th
We are deeply touched by the outpouring of generosity from our community. The amount of donations weโve received is truly unreal, and every bit of it is much needed. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
We have some good news to share: rescue crews have reported that a one-lane road to Chimney Rock has been cleared for emergency vehicles only. This is allowing vital services to reach the area, and the Forestry Service has already loaded up trucks to head out. Please be aware that this road is strictly for emergency use, and we ask that the public avoid the area so crews can continue their critical work uninterrupted.
As for our list of needs, there are a few updates. We are now requesting storage bins and plastic totes to help pack supplies and keep them dry during helicopter drops. In addition, we could use individual toothbrush holders, small tubes of sunscreen, travel-sized q-tips, and clear shoeboxes. All other requested items are still very much needed, including chainsaws, small bottles of two-cycle and chain oil, protective gear such as gloves and glasses, camping gear, sleeping bags, RMEs or canned meals, smaller generators, reusable bags, big zip locks, hand warmers, power banks, solar chargers, shovels, pick axes, mattocks, propane heaters or Buddy heaters, flashlights, batteries, beanies, hand saws, and any gear that will help crews reach those in need.
With some rescue vehicles now able to reach our hardest-hit communities, we are also accepting full propane tanks for grills and larger generators, though small portable generators remain a priority.
Once again, we want to express our deepest gratitude to the Western North Carolina Air Museum for leading this vital effort, Realtor Kelsey Varga, Asheville, NC for helping organize the GoFundMe and Amazon Wish List, and, most of all, to every one of you for your unwavering support. Your kindness is making a real difference in the lives of those who need it most.
Together, we will get through this. Thank you, Oklawaha Community!
