Glyphosate is one of the most widely used herbicides in the world, applied in agricultural fields, urban landscapes, and rights-of-way across California to control weeds and other grasses. But what happens when it doesn't stay where it's sprayed?
When glyphosate enters rivers and streams through runoff, it can disrupt the delicate web of life that healthy fisheries depend on. Research has shown that glyphosate and some of its formulations can affect aquatic insects, amphibians, and the habitat conditions that support native fish.
Additional stressors matter for wild trout, salmon, and steelhead already facing threats like warming waters, habitat loss, and migration barriers. Healthy fisheries require healthy watersheds — and protecting the streams that sustain fish means carefully considering the impacts of the chemicals we use on the land around them.
