This vintage brochure is from the days when the lodge was home to the Melrose Caverns Playhouse, which was operated by James Madison University (then Madison College).

Before the curtain rose, guests were invited to tour the caverns by candlelight before heading upstairs for an evening of live theater. Talk about a unique night out!

During his visit to Melrose Caverns in 1862, Union soldier William P. Hugus left his signature behind — not once, not twice, but fifteen different times throughout the cave.

Was he making his mark? Showing off his handwriting? Just having a little fun exploring? We may never know… but his signatures are still waiting to be found more than 160 years later.
