There are so many wonderful caves in the Shenandoah Valley! Have you visited them all?

Just for fun.....TWO QUESTIONS for you all!

1-What is your FAVORITE cave you have ever been in? Why?*

2-What show cave are you most interested in visiting soon?**

*If you can't name the cave (It is important to protect the names and locations of caves not managed by on-site operations) that's ok. We are all about cave conservation.

**Show caves are caves open to the public for tours. Whether it be a private business, a state park, a national park, non-profit... whether the cave is wired and lit or it only offers caving adventures with helmets and headlamps, a SHOW CAVE is a cave that SHOWS you what caves are all about. Our organization, the NCA, is a non-profit group for SHOW CAVES, where we all work together to improve the way we manage and interpret our caves for you.

🪨 Happy Cave Week! 🦇
What is your favorite thing to see when you go to a cave?

Caves are home to incredible but fragile resources—from stunning speleothems (cave formations) and ancient fossils to unique wildlife and historical artifacts. Because these environments are so sensitive and contain vital groundwater, it's up to us to protect them whether we are on a guided tour or visiting a wild cave.

🗺️ If you are visiting a Show Cave:
👀Look but don't touch: Keep your hands off the walls and formations. The natural oils on your skin can permanently stunt cave growth.
🛣️Stay on the path: Paved trails are designed to keep visitors safe and protect fragile cave floors from being crushed.
🎒Pack it out: Never leave trash, food, or even crumbs behind, as they can disrupt the entire cave ecosystem.

When going to a wild cave:
👋 Wear gloves – The oils on your hands can stop cave formations from growing.
🪖 Wear a helmet – Protect your head from low ceilings.
⚠️ The Rule of Three – Always travel with at least 3 people, carry 3 sources of light, and maintain 3 points of contact when through difficult terrain.

Enjoy the underground, but always explore respectfully so these wonders are preserved for the future!

This Military Appreciation Month, we honor and thank those who have served.

Every day, we get to share a small piece of history here beneath the surface. As we approach America’s 250th, it’s a meaningful reminder of the people who have helped shape and protect that history.

We’re grateful for your service.
